Electroplankton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Electroplankton is an interactive music video game developed by the Japanese multimedia artist Toshio Iwai and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo DS portable gaming system.
The Performance mode is considered to be the beef of Electroplankton, allowing the user to interact with the plankton with the use of the stylus, touchscreen, and microphone.
Nonetheless, Electroplankton is an import friendly game for most people, mainly because of both its simplistic menu and its light use of English.

 IGN: Electroplankton Preview
April 11, 2005 - As I play through Electroplankton, I'm reminded of one of the displays at EPCOT Center's Land of Imagination; a unique hands-on visual and audio experience where you raise and lower your hands in various colors of light to create different sounds at higher and lower pitch.
In each of the different Electroplankton themes, players manipulate each of the marine creatures, their environment, or both to produce sounds and melodies of various musical instruments.
The entire motion of the stylus path affects the audio that's played when the plankton moves along it; the direction affects the pitch of the note, and the drawn pace affects the length of the note played.

 Electroplankton (ds: 2006): Reviews
Electroplankton is also one of those games for people looking for a change in game design or a form of innovation.
Electroplankton’s value is very difficult to quantify, and on its own terms succeeds in what it set out to achieve- a ‘touchable media art’ piece of software (creator Toshio Iwai’s words) and in that context it is difficult to find fault with it.
Electroplankton is an interesting experiment in both music and game design, but its reliance on the novelty of something different limits its lasting value.

Electroplankton Review - Nintendo DS Review - Australia's PAL Gaming Network
Electroplankton, by its developers, is described as ‘interactive art’, and that is exactly what it is. Currently only available in Japan at the moment (the version that this review is based on), it's strong presence at E3 this year indicates a release in PAL regions is on the way.
Electroplankton is essentially one huge musical instrument, uniquely blended with the obscure and abstract visuals of an underwater world.
While Electroplankton is more like how many would treat a musical instrument in that the point of playing is the enjoying and not so much the end result, there are times that you create such an impressive tune, it’s a shame you couldn’t save that moment rather than trying to replicate it again.

The second game demonstration, Electroplankton, has also been released to a noteably more dubious response; as Iwata mentioned during the demonstration, some gamers appear to be confused as they look for enemies to destroy or their high score.
Electroplankton may very well be a game that bridges the gap between Nintendo's current consumer base and potential consumers, who have either never played a video game in their life, or who perhaps lost interest in gaming at some point in the past.
Given what Nintendo has said about Electroplankton and given the company's goal of attracting non-gamers to its products, I was eager to see the reaction of a forty-six year old woman who had never touched a video game in her life.

What Electroplankton does offer is an exploratory visual and aural journey through the mind of Japanese artist Toshio Iwai; an experience that comes about as close as possible to absolute freedom of progression as it is possible to go within the limitations of the medium.
So, Electroplankton seems to stand to one side of traditional classification, making somewhat of a mockery of the act of attaching a numerical score to it.
Electroplankton is a staggeringly difficult thing to describe.

The Tracy ElectroPlankton, for example, are six multicolored creatures that follow paths that you draw with the stylus.
The ElectroPlankton will also typically be affected by pressing the d-pad or the Select button, allowing you to speed up or slow down the tempo, alter the background beat, and other similar effects.
Each of the ElectroPlankton are quite different as well, allowing you to produce very different sounds, so there's no sense of repetition between each of the modes.

Electroplankton is comprised of 10 such musical toys, and a playful visual style is employed to give the impression that each takes place in some sort of bizarre petri dish--or perhaps a very musical aquarium--filled with different species of plankton that can produce sound and light when you interact with them.
