On the other hand, the passion of love inspires Mimnermus, whose elegies are the prototypes not only of the later Greek pieces, and of the Latin poems of the school of Tibullus and Propertius, but of a great deal of the formal erotic poetry of modern Europe.
The elegy, in its calm movement, seems to have begun to lose currency when the ecstasy of emotion was more successfully interpreted by the various rhythmic and dithyrambic inventions of the Aeolic lyrists.
But it is curious to notice that all the elegies of these poets were of an an.iatory nature, and that antiquity styled the funeral dirges of Theocritus, Bion and Moschuswhich are to us the types of elegynot elegies at all, but idylls.

Elegy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elegy was originally used for a type of poetic metre (Elegiac metre), but is also used for a poem of mourning, from the Greek elegos, a reflection on the death of someone or on a sorrow generally.
In addition, an elegy (sometimes spelled elegĂe) may be a type of musical work, usually in a sad and somber attitude.

An elegy is a lament, a formal poem of loss and grief which pays respect to the attributes of someone who has died.
By contrast, the modern elegy often focuses on private grief, reflecting the diminution of the role of public poetry in society.
Your elegy may be a formal poem for a public figure whose contribution to society you admire, or it may be a private poem for someone you loved and respected.

The UVic Writer's Guide: Elegy   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The term elegy was usually used in classical times for love poetry written with a specific meter, and in the Renaissance it kept this sense with some variation.
However, since the seventeenth century elegy has come to mean a formal poem of lament and consolation concerning a particular person's death, or reflection on death in general (as in Gray's "Elegy in a Country Churchyard" [1751]).
Milton's "Lycidas" (1638) is an example of the pastoral elegy, in which the speaker and the person mourned are shepherds.

The subject of the Elegy is a young man named William Peter, who was murdered near Exeter in January of 1612.
Furthermore, the style of the Elegy, though very fine, shows that the poet had not yet reached the full mastery of rhyming verse he would achieve in the Sonnets.
The poet refers to himself in the Elegy _ a presumptuous gesture in a poem of mourning, unless the author was himself a man of some importance.

 Elegy on Imam Husayn (a)
Any elegy (in the restricted sense in which we are speaking here) may strike a universal note; in fact that is one of the requirements of an elegy, but very few examples tend to survive as poetry or as something which would continue to evoke deep emotion.
In many later elegies on Husayn, the lament is put into the mouths of females of his family, Fatima, for instance, or Zaynab, and this recalls the pre-Islamic elegy.
Elegy for Husayn continues in Arabic in popular or dialect form as well, proof of the power of the martry to enter into and affect the life of the common people.

In the twenty-five years between the release of Wrecking Crew and the posthumous publication of Levis's final collection of poems, Elegy, readers were able to witness a gradual maturation of the man and his increasingly masterful use of a distinctive poetic style which now stands as a model for other poets to follow.
An ongoing interest in the elegy and elegiac poetry is evident in an essay titled "Mock Mockers after That," originally delivered as a lecture by Levis at the Warren Wilson MFA Seminar for Writers in 1994 and included in The Gazer Within.
Levis acknowledges feeling a sense of "injustice," that his work may be praised or he might garner attention for each elegy or elegiac poem he has written about the deaths and losses of so many others, especially since those written about cannot control how they are portrayed by the poet.

Later taken up and developed in Roman poetry, it was widely used by Catullus, Ovid, and other Latin poets.
In English poetry, since the 16th cent., the term elegy designates a reflective poem of lamentation or regret, with no set metrical form, generally of melancholy tone, often on death.
Famous pastoral elegies are Milton’s “Lycidas,” on Edward King; Shelley’s “Adonais,” on John Keats; and Matthew Arnold’s “Thyrsis,” on Arthur Hugh Clough.
