In 1981, when it was contracted to Elektra Records in the U.S., Queen released an album called Greatest Hits (Elektra 564), which contained 14 songs that chronicled singles from 1973 to 1981.
Then it released this album, its version of Greatest Hits, which is a 17-track album that deletes the songs from the first Greatest Hits that appeared on Classic Queen (among them Queen's biggest hit, "Bohemian Rhapsody") and adds a few tracks from the 1973-1982 era that did not appear on the original release.
The Elektra Greatest Hits LP had a superior selection, but it's gone now, so you're stuck with this.

Combined with Greatest Hits II it became the definitive Queen compilation.
The seventeen-track UK Greatest Hits disc was released in the U.S. on its own for the first time, with a few bonus tracks, in 2004 under the name Greatest Hits: We Will Rock You Edition.
Hollywood Records decided to not release "Greatest Hits II" to the US market, but instead created their own collection, "Classic Queen" (1992).

I'm glad that she overthrew the clich'e for greatest hits albums to put on the behemoth single of a career.
This greatest hits is a perfect way to start out your Bjork collection for new-bees, but I suggest buying her albums because more so than the songs I listed above, there are many album singles that are far better than released singles, and worth the cd price alone.
But it's not a replacement for her albums; while the non-chronological sequencing here makes the hits collection sound something like a normal album, there's a rhythm and flow to each of her regular releases that enhances the "hits" and allows the album tracks to function well as parts of a unified whole.

Björk begins her Greatest Hits album saying "all is full of love" -- a blatant, worldwide celebratory symbol of the chaotic and beautiful ways of the universe.
But with these chosen greatest hits we are witnesses to an emotionally heavier side of Björk.

Let's call this record the "greatest" of the "greatest hits records." All of the tracks on the new hits records have been on the other "hits" records, with the exception of two new, noteworthy tracks.
The expected hits ("Lovesong," "A Forest," "Friday I'm In Love," etc.) are all here and remain somewhat timeless after the years.
All of the songs found on Greatest Hits can be found in their acoustic incarnations on the bonus disc.

Arbitrary and somewhat unrepresentative, the new Greatest Hits package by The Cure is inessential for fans new or old, even if you buy the limited edition double disc that includes acoustic versions of all the songs.
Robert Smith knows he’s bullet-proof as far as his repertoire of singles goes, so another greatest hits release is an excuse to keep some thin blood flowing through the old horse as well as an excuse to squash “break-up” rumors by adding two “new” songs.
One of the new “greatest hits” featured, “Cut Here”, is actually one of the better singles the band has released in a decade, as typically Cure-sounding as it is. Robert Smith has created his own brand of cliché.

I’ve heard all of this before, so Greatest Hits doesn’t light a fire under my fanny, at least not enough of one to make me stand up and give a speech about Morrison as the animal-poet-antichrist.
I have read several times that the 1996 compilation, Greatest Hits, is a reissue of the 1980 compilation.
So for the edification of the discographically challenged among us: you can compile songs from an artist, re-compile many of the same songs-even in the same order-years later and issue them both under the same name, but what you’ve got is a re-compilation not a reissue.

This 18-track collection of hits spanning the revered hip-hop/rap act's nearly 20-year career was officially sanctioned by its leader, Chuck D. That probably helps explain why the version of "Bring the Noise" included here is the one without the heavy-metal assistance of Anthrax.
From the hit single "Moonshadow" to his rendition of "Morning Has Broken" to "Wild World" and "Peace Train," the singer's voice is soothing and gentle.
This two-disc set, featuring 44 hits and rarities, is the definitive collection to date of the late, lamented, Southern California act that dabbled in funk, punk, ska and reggae.

The Cars were responsible for some of rock's most recognizable radio hits by the mid '80s, so when the band took an extended break after their successful tour for Heartbeat City, 1985's Greatest Hits (Elektra) was assembled.
Other missing radio staples include "You're All I've Got Tonight," "It's All I Can Do," and the title track from Candy-O, which would have made the collection definitive (all are included on the more extensive Just What I Needed: Cars Anthology from 1995).

But there are some glaring omissions which render this Greatest Hits package appealing only to diehard fans and not to the more casual listener, to whom Greatest Hits records are often geared.
The bad: some of her biggest "hits" (of which she only has a handful to begin with), like the urgent "Violently Happy," "It's Oh So Quiet" and the Oscar-nominated "I've Seen It All" are tragically missing.
But while the album may be a tidy introduction for those unfamiliar with Björk's earth-splitting sonic creations, non-fans are probably better off starting with Debut and working their way up.
