Since moving to Vancouver from Guelph, Ont., in 1970, Fricker has sung in the Cantata Singers, the Vancouver Bach Choir, Vancouver Chorale, Christ Church Cathedral Choir and several smaller groups including the Elektra Women's Choir.
Edmundson, who now co-conducts Elektra, was a 14-year-old student at the time, and says Fricker helped instill in her a passion for good music.
Although Fricker was simply volunteering at the time, the choir teacher noted her strong musical background and eventually sat at the piano and let Fricker take the lead role.

 Welcome to the Now
The reason for that may be largely due to the fact Elektra has been central to the boom of international women's choirs and is seen as something of a role model in the genre.
Instead of using music intended for other types of choirs, Elektra is careful to search out music written specifically for women's voices.
Perhaps the most unusual aspect of this choir is the insistence Edmundson and Loomer have on splitting the conducting duties exactly in half.

The Elektra Women's Choir will soon be under the direction of three fortunate candidates chosen to participate in the ensemble's Conductor Mentorship Program, which starts this month and runs until March.
The mentorship program will allow the three candidates (who have yet to be confirmed) to participate closely in Elektra's rehearsals and to benefit from having Loomer and Edmundson observe and comment on their work with their own choirs.
According to Diane Loomer, who co-conducts Elektra along with Morna Edmundson, the program is taking place for the second year in a row in order to help address a lack of experience at the top of Canada's rapidly expanding field of choral music.

TEP VSO Review: “Gilbert and Sullivan”
In the tradition of old Music Hall entertainment, Bramwell Tovey and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra accompanied by the Elektra Women's Choir, the Chor Leoni Men's Choir and four soloists played to a packed house Friday night with an evening of Gilbert and Sullivan tunes.
With quips to the audience and general silly asides ranging from past and present political pokes to Victorian cultural quirks, Maestro Tovey told us this was an evening of light satire - the upper classes, their moral mindset and politicians being the brunt of the joke.
But as inane as much of the music is, the atmosphere was distinctly of another time; the evening could have taken place a hundred years ago save for the updated lyrics in one number which gave this old-fashioned style of satire a refreshingly relevant feel.
