Topic: Element math

  Mathematical Markup Language (Chapter 7)
For example, embedded elements will need to be able to detect the ambient rendering environment, such as baseline, font family and color scheme, and respond appropriately to reader input such as font size changes.
The math element must always be the outermost element in a MathML expression; it is an error for one math element to contain another.
The top-level math element described in the preceding section is concerned with encapsulating MathML content and defining attributes which affect the entire enclosed expression.

 HTML Math
HTML math is powerful enough to describe the range of math expressions you can create in common word processing packages, as well as being suitable for rendering to speech.
HTML math follows general practice in mathematical typesetting by rendering functions, numbers and other constants in an upright font, while variables are rendered in an italic font.
The math tokeniser needs to be able to distinguish constants, variables, functions, operators, delimiters, and special symbols such as integrals, which can take limits and may be stretchy.

 Math Markup Language (Chapter 2)
Typical examples are the mrow element, which is used to indicate a horizontal row of characters, and the msup element, which is used to indicate a base and superscript.
The math element is neither, since its role is to serve as a top-level, interface element.
This information is also given for presentation elements in the table of argument requirements in Section 3.1.3, and for content elements in the EBNF grammar for content markup in appendix E.

The mo element is also used to mark-up other symbols which are only operators in a very general sense, but whose layout properties are like those of an operator.
The mfrac element expects exactly two children, the first of which will be positioned as the numerator of a fraction, and the second will be the denominator.
The mroot element is nearly identical to the msqrt element, except it expects a second child, which is displayed above the radical in the location of the n in an nth root.

Re: embedded TEXT elements   (Site not responding. Last check: )
(And further interpret >math within that text element?) You're absolutely right about the need for the math interpreter to interpret standard HTML code within a MATH element (and not even just within a TEXT element, I think, but, for example, links and anchors and perhaps other HTML elements embedded directly within the MATH element).
I meant to refer to the whole set of HTML elements that should be includable, including TEXT.) I think one of the pieces of work we need to do right away is to understand the set of HTML elements that we need to support embedded in a MATH element.
As for support of text by a plugin, it will be possible, though it may require duplication of the parent browser's behavior for this within the plugin code.

 QuickMath Automatic Math Solutions
A matrix is a rectangular array of elements (usually called scalars), which are set out in rows and columns.
For instance, when adding two matrices A and B, the element at row i, column j of A is added to the element at row i, column j of B to give the element at row i, column j of the answer.
Multiplying a matrix by a scalar simply involves multiplying each element by that scalar, whilst raising a matrix to a positive integer power can be achieved by a series of matrix multiplications.

 Namespaces
The biggest change from the previous examples is that MathML uses namespaces on all the elements.
The basic JDOM rule about namespaces is that when an element or attribute is in a namespace, rather than specifying its full qualified name, you give its local name, its prefix, and its URI, in that order.
Each element (and each attribute) has its own namespace URI which is independent of the other namespace URIs in the document.
