False memory - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A false memory is a memory of an event that did not happen or is a distortion of an event that did occur as determined by externally corroborated facts.
The memory may be partly accurate, but in fact the child is half remembering fragments of a Thanksgiving party: daddy was carving the turkey and singing loudly, and mommy's expression is because she is shouting at the dog to lie down.
Studies show that memories can be implanted, but we lack studies on implanted traumatic memories and their related effects—such as post-traumatic stress disorder and dissociative identity disorder—because such studies would be unethical.

 Elephants are large-brained
The temporal lobes of the elephant's brain which are thought to function in recognition, storage and retrieval of information related to sight, touch, smell and hearing, are especially large and enormously complex and, relative to brain size, appear to be larger, more convoluted and denser than those of humans (45).
Elephants pick up objects (logs, rocks) and throw them at their opponents, they use leafy branches as fly switches, short, sturdy sticks to de-tick themselves, and logs to neutralize electric fences to name a few (see Poole, 58).
Elephants exhibit a variety of responses to dying or dead elephants and to elephants bones or tusks including touching with the trunk and feet, attempted lifting and carrying of the body or bones, mounting, feeding, body guarding, covering and burying (see descriptions under ElephantVoices Visual and Tactile Database).

 Elephants are Long-Lived
Longevity is a key factor in elephants’ abilities to acquire and pass on knowledge through gene-rations and in the development of their complex social system and extensive communication.
Elephant calves are relatively slow growing and are dependent on their mother's milk for more than two years(11).
Elephants have many food sources and it is important for calves to learn a wide range of these seasonally and geographically varying species(51).

These sounds carry long distances and allow the elephants to assess where they are positioned in relation to one another, enabling them to co-ordinate group movement and alert others to their sexual and emotional state.
The feet of elephants are more than mere clumping cylinders; their interiors are filled with vibration sensors known as Pacinian corpuscles, which have a structure similar to an onion, with a slimy gel between each layer.
The cameras also showed the elephants standing with their trunks to the ground, as though they were listening, which is probably what they were doing, given that the trunk is also packed with vibration sensors.

This is because the oldest female elephant is the one with the longest memory in the family.

 "Elephants Memory" Liner Notes
An elephant's memory is legendarily large, and so was the size and scope of the New York band that went by the same name.
If Elephants Memory were a strange band, they were certainly no stranger than their surroundings, with second-degree-separations between the careers of not only Bowie, Midnight Cowboy star Dustin Hoffman, and the Partridge Family, but also the Beatles and Carly Simon.
The foundation of Elephants Memory in the late 1960s has been attributed to singer, saxophonist, flautist, and clarinetist Stan Bronstein and drummer Rick Frank; singer Michal Shapiro's understanding was that bassist/trombonist Myron Yules, who'd played in big bands with Bronstein, was also an original member.

Science study explores social memory in elephants
Experienced female elephants act as guardians of social knowledge, listening to other elephants’ calls and then signalling to their families who is friendly and co-operative and who might present problems by harassing calves or starting disputes.
Using data on African elephants at the Amboseli Elephant Research Project in Kenya, the researchers showed that families with matriarchs aged 55 years or over were several thousand times more likely to bunch together defensively in response to calls from families they rarely encountered than families with which they often associated.
To be sure the observations were the result of the matriarch’s knowledge, the researchers also noted the number of females in the group, the average age of females other than the matriarch, the number of calves, the age of the youngest calf and the presence or absence of adult males.

Elephants have such excellent memories they may well easily recognise the land they once roamed," said Professor Willem van Riet, the project's technical advisor.
