  Encyclopedia: Elephant six
The Elephant Six Recording Company was a musical collective founded in Athens, Georgia, USA, by Bill Doss, Will Cullen Hart (both, now formerly, of Olivia Tremor Control), Jeff Mangum (of Neutral Milk Hotel), and Robert Schneider (of the Apples in Stereo), the four of whom grew up making music in Ruston, Louisiana.
In October 2002, the Elephant Six Collective as a fully functioning entity called it quits, due to difficulties in recording and lack of organization.
The bands of the collective have since all moved on to various labels and projects of their own, though many are still friends and even tour together under various guises.

The article, which refers to Elephant 6 in the past tense, notes that the purpose of the collective (to elevate awareness of underground bands affiliated with the then-fledgling Apples In Stereo) has more or less run its course, peaking with Warner imprint Sire's major-label distribution of the Apples' Toul Soul Evolution in 1998.
Two of the collective's founding bands-- The Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel-- are unlikely to be resurrected soon, at least not in the glorious full-band touring incarnations of four years ago.
The label hit its zenith around 1997, when Elephant 6 were actively recruiting new members of the collective and released the debut singles from Beulah and the Minders.

Schneider was the one who actually created the record label when he moved to Denver, Colorado in late 1991 and attended University of Colorado at Boulder.
From there on in, most of the bands were signed to major record labels and the recording company as an entity slowly deteoriated until the collective called it quits, due to difficulties in recording and lack of organization, in 2002.

After issuing a collection of early singles and previously unreleased tracks (Cul de Sacs and Dead Ends, 1999), the Minders made a departure of sorts with the somewhat more rockin' and heavier (next to previous Minders records only; Sabbath it ain't) Down in Fall EP (2000).

The group's self-titled debut, issued on their own Cloud Recordings in late 2001, was so richly layered with kalediscopic sound (dozens of tracks of ephemeral guitars, whispering choirs, lush buzzes, toy pianos, recordings of birds, bells, strings...) that when Hart "reanimated" it on 2002's Inside Views, it sounded like a completely different record.

Elephant 6 used to get a lot of press, back when Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel and The Apples (In Stereo) were all busting out with albums every year, each one urging the others further afield in their mission to bring weirder and wilder 1960s noises and 1990s experimentation together.
Meanwhile, it has fallen to the "second-tier" Elephant 6 bands to keep the flag flying.

The "Here Comes the Sun"-worshipping Elephant 6 collective may have officially disbanded a couple of years back, but it seems no one told Of Montreal.
Though it clearly spawned some of indie-pop's finest moments to date (witness Elf Power's Winter Is Coming and Apples in Stereo's Tone Soul Evolution), the weakness of Elephant 6, much like any cult of retro-personality, was that eventually the multi-band reverence came off sounding a little like lack of inspiration.
To its credit, Of Montreal has always been the most inventive and adventurous of the collective, drawing on a wider range of influences and liberal doses of the bandmates' own inspiration.
