Chessville -Psychology of Gambit Chess Openings - by Clyde Nakamura   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
A gambit chess opening involves the sacrifice of one or more pawns, pieces or even a combination of pawns and pieces in the opening part of the game to obtain compensation in terms of better central control, better development of pieces or some other kind of advantage.
Playing a gambit chess opening in a chess game requires a different mindset from playing a regular chess opening where no pawns or pieces are sacrificed early in the opening.
A gambit player may hold the endgame a pawn down but if you are down two pawns you will probably not hold the endgame to a draw.

Once known as the Queen's Pawn's Counter Gambit (1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 d5!?), this daring thrust by Black has 19th century origins and ever since has been revived as a surprise weapon from time to time.
Unlike some recently-invented Gambits which are not mentioned in many books, there is a certain amount of information on this counter-gambit in the sort of books that the average player is likely to consult.
Here the gambit is not accepted at once, but the knight takes up a potentially strong post.

Although a huge fan of the Elephant, I have a feeling that in time we'll be able to scrap this one too - fl gives away a central pawn with very little justification, and I don't believe that he can or should be able to get away with it.
As for the doubting Thomases, let me renind them that the myth of the gambit's refutability is actually one of its assets.Well-prepared, but lower-ranked players may spring this gambit on unsuspecting opponents and go on to win.

Accurate play by Black is necessary to hold and neutralize the initial gains of the opposition, and it will be difficult to demonstrate anything better than equality, or that White cannot claim real compensation for the gambit pawn.

The Elephant Gambit (also called the Queen's Pawn Counter Gambit or Englund Counterattack) is a rarely played chess opening beginning with the moves (in algebraic chess notation):
In this gambit, Black ignores the attack on his e-pawn and immediately tries to wrest the initiative from White.
The resulting position can be sharp for White, and thus may be a good surprise opening for Black.
