Jack White's description of the album is as intriguing as the album itself, and it doesn't help that it's so ambiguous that it doesn't really help explain anything (he describes the album as dealing with "characters and the ideal of truth"...
The Most Solid Stripes Album to date : This album has a strong, fairly dark blues sound and feel to it which has been referenced to on some of their other albums but is in full force here.
The album is laden with Jack's slide guitar and he sounds like some of the best classic blues players of the past...

 White Stripes: Elephant (2003): Reviews
Elephant overflows with quality -- it's full of tight songwriting, sharp, witty lyrics, and judiciously used basses and tumbling keyboard melodies that enhance the band's powerful simplicity.
Elephant is a startlingly dark and consistent record, incorporating frequencies never before heard on a White Stripes album.
Elephant isn't one of those albums that'll change your life, or your tastes, or even the face of your music collection -- it's just a strong and consistent collection of powerful rock songs.

 Greensleeves - Elephant Man
On stage Elephant is a whirlwind of activity: launching himself high into the air, climbing monitors and running from stage side to stage side in an attempt to express himself to his people.
Elephant Man had already discovered his talent at the age of 15 when he used to use school desks to beat out rhythms and rhymes to go along with them, when he determined that deejaying would be his ticket to success.
Elephant recounts when he was just starting out, "Bounty say it a go hard fi one-one man bus out fi we come together den a bigger tings" - a philosophy which he plans to employ to develop talent around him.

Everything associated with the band including their new album Elephant is coated in huge swaths of their trademark throbbing red and violent white which forms the bands seductive stripes and swirls.
Elephant avoids typical themes of party life in garage rock and almost exclusively deals with the ever sensitive issue of women in Jack’s life.
Elephant is all we ever need, simple songs performed with such passion that it makes us feel perfectly comfortable being hypnotized by electric dirty blues riffs and the innocence of red and white spirals.

The White Stripes - Elephant   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-05)
Elephant captures this contradiction within the Stripes and their music; it's the first album they've recorded for a major label, and it sounds even more pissed-off, paranoid, and stunning than its predecessor.
Elephant, the Stripes' fourth long-player, has been trumpeted as a make-or-break deal, since it arrives on the heels of their smash White Blood Cells, and from virtually the first groove of the anthemic "Seven Nation Army," it's clear that they have no intention of buckling under the strain.
On Elephant, Jack White writes and sings with the same depth and viscera, exceeding the plantation holler of 2000's De Stijl and 2001's White Blood Cells with blues that both pop and bleed.

BBC - Rock & Alt Review - The White Stripes, Elephant
The album was recorded in East London and Jack White's holding a cricket bat on the cover, so maybe it's not surprising that a lot of the album sounds very English.
He has written also that this album was dedicated to, and was for, and about the death of the sweetheart and I'm sure that also the birth of new era of rock music.
Elephant is a brilliant all-round album, the stripped down approach to music and pure rock and roll spirit that has been absent in music for too long.

Elephant just sums up what is so great about them - raw, powerful music from two people who clearly love what they are doing, and make no apology for sticking to their musical ideals.

I've had Elephant for some time now and so I've had a chance for it to grow on me. The first and last couple of tracks are absolutely amazing, as is Ball and Biscuit.

And, as rumors of their fourth album, Elephant began to surface ("Meg's going to sing!" / "Jacks' going to have a guitar solo!" / "Holly Golightly's guesting!"), it became evident that, should Elephant outperform White Blood Cells sonically, it would be the album to solidify Jack and Meg Whites' position in rock history.
The album's highest point, however, is the extensive rocker (7+ minutes) of "Ball and Biscuit." It's The White Stripes at their rock-iest, and features some of the gnarliest guitar work Jack's ever done.
While Elephant is truly an amazing album, and transcends simple categorization of The White Stripes as "one of those 'the' bands," I can't help but feel the heapings of praise have been a bit too much.
