The Elephant and Castle, commonly shortened to the Elephant, is a major road intersection in inner south London, and is also used as a name for the surrounding district.
The Elephant is also home to Elephant and Castle station, Skipton House (housing the Department of Health), London South Bank University, London College of Communication, the Ministry of Sound nightclub and the Metropolitan Tabernacle.
The elephant and castle symbol was also used in a trade that made a far more important contribution to the London economy.

The Elephant & Castle shopping centre and it's surrounding estate should have been protected, not left to waste away.
I enjoy the Elephant and Castle as it is. It could be made to work, only it's not on the developers agenda.
And just south of the Elephant area, the sprawling Aylesbury estate deserves a mention or two, for this seems to be going the same way.

A week of celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre ended in high tension as a crowd gathered to watch the prize draw for a car.
The celebrations were perhaps dampened by the knowledge that the centre is unlikely to see its 50th birthday; though few would claim to love the building, the future for the quirky mix of shops it houses is perhaps less than certain.

That would put Elephant and Castle in the same class of pub name as Goat and Compasses but, like the story of the way that name came into being, it’s almost certainly false.

The "masterplan" for regenerating a 170-acre site of Elephant and Castle was adopted by the London Borough of Southwark on Thursday evening.
Elephant and Castle's red shopping centre and five 12-storey blocks of flats are to be demolished and the gyratory road system will be re-routed.
In a separate survey of the residents of the post-war council blocks on the Heygate Estate, who are to be re-housed, 61% of respondents supported the plans, 12% opposed them and 28% had no opinion about them.

The demonstration, reported by the into website team last week, was organised by the Respect our Youth campaign and was supported by a range of different groups, ASBO Concern, Lambeth Pensioners, The Movement for Justice, and activists of the Respect Party (organisers create their own banners pictured right).
