Elephant jokes -- a subversive plot by Fr. Sean
There are two types of joke which are called "elephant jokes": the elephant joke proper, and the joke which merely drags a poor elephant in by its tail against its wishes, generally because it is very big and for no other reason.
The elephants do not have to be dragged in, kicking and screaming, but they cooperate nicely because it suits their natural sense of humor.
A true elephant joke does not depend on the size of the elephant for its laughs, but rather on a completely different logic which demands that the hearer either submit to the peculiar rules of the world of elephant jokes, or suffer the consequences of not "getting it".

Nippop | Thee Michelle Gun Elephant | Profile
There is no shortage of bands with wacky names in Japan, and Thee Michelle Gun Elephant is up there with the best of them.
TMGE (the band’s name is apparently a surreal take on the title of an album by the Damned, Machine Gun Etiquette -- go figure) first got together in 1991 and debuted at Shelter, a well-known live house in Tokyo’s Shimokitazawa district and immediately made a name for themselves with their punkish, Ramones-like rock.
Crucial to the band’s appeal was lead vocalist Yusuke Chiba, who sang with a maniacal intensity that made one wonder whether he was demonically possessed, and lead guitarist Futoshi Abe, who combined the riffmeistery of a Keith Richards with the buzzsaw attack of a Johnny Ramone.

Thee Michelle Gun Elephant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thee Michelle Gun Elephant (also known as TMGE) was a Japanese Garage band of notable popularity in its country of origin.
The band was formed while the band members were students at Tokyo's Meiji Gakuin University, and their name came from a combination of the name of Billy Childish's offbeat band Thee Headcoats and a former bassist's mispronunciation of the name of The Damned's album, Machine Gun Etiquette.
Their first major label release, Wonder Style, was released in 1995, and produced in London, United Kingdom, by Chris Brown, who previously engineered albums and tracks for Radiohead and Pink Floyd.
