  Cardamom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elettaria is distributed from India to Western Malaysia (commonly called Green cardamom or just cardamom), Amomum mainly in Asia and Australia (Cardamom, Kravan, Java cardamom, Bengal cardamom, Siamese cardamom, White/Green/Red/Black cardamom, Guinea grains, Grains of paradise) and Aframomum in Africa and Madagascar (Cardamom, Madagascar cardamom).
In general Aframomum is used as a spice, Elettaria both as a spice and as medicine (and a masticatory), and Amomum used as an ingredient in several traditional medicines in China (see traditional Chinese medicine (TCM)), India, Korea and Vietnam.
Elettaria is used as a food plant by the larva of the moth Endoclita hosei.

A cardamom of much larger size found growing in Ceylon wa,s formerly regarded as belonging to a distinct species, and described as such under the name of Elettaria major; but it is now known to be only a variety of the Malabar cardamom.

TAXONOMY NOTES BY BRIAN MIDDLEDITCH - Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton: OK. But this is not Sha Ren ("Sand Seeds"), which is Amomum villosum Lour.
There are some floating around florida now, that are indeed the true Elettaria and not an Alpinia sp.
If the leaves are smooth, then it is probably Alpinia nutans or one of the other Alpinia species being sold as Eletarria.
