The city of Eleutheropolis is depicted in the Madaba mosaic map as a large settlement to the southwest of Jerusalem.
Eleutheropolis (Bet Guvrin) was located some 53 kms south-southwest of Jerusalem, in the midst of the Judaean Shephelah (hilly region), 39 kms east of Ascalon (Ashkelon).
In the Church of St. Stephen at Umm al-Rasas eight western Palestinian towns are depicted in the northern belt of the church's mosaic floor (Piccirillo and Alliata 1994: 177, 182, 217-224).

 Eleutheropolis
In 393, during the episcopate of Zebennus, the relics of the Prophets Habakuk and Micah were found at Ceila and Tell Zakariya near Eleutheropolis (Sozom., H.E., VII, xxix).
At Eleutheropolis was born St. Epiphanius, the celebrated bishop of Salamis in Cyprus; at Ad in the neighbourhood he established a monastery which is often mentioned in the polemics of St. Jerome with Rufinus and John, Bishop of Jerusalem.
The latter beheaded (638) at Eleutheropolis fifty soldiers of the garrison of Gaza who had refused to apostatize.

Eleutheropolis ("city of the free") was the Greek name of a Roman city in Palestine, some 53 km southwest of Jerusalem.
At Eleutheropolis, according to the hagiographies fifty soldiers of the garrison of Gaza who had refused to deny Christ were beheaded in 638: later a church was built in their honor.

Epiphanius, a celebrated Church Father, born in the beginning of the 4th century at Bezanduca, a village of Palestine, near Eleutheropolis.
In his youth he resided in Egypt, where he began an ascetic course of life, and, freeing himself from Gnostic influences, invoked episcopal assistance against heretical thinkers, eighty of whom were driven from the cities.

Beth Guvrin had been a suburb of Maresha but it became the major living center by the Roman Period.
Beth Guvrin eventually became Eleutheropolis (“City of the Free”) in the Late Roman period (200 A.D.) when Emperor Septimus Severus turned it into a major administrative center.

It represents the Biblical Mareshah, the ruins of which exist at Tell Sandahannah close by.
As Betogabra it is mentioned by Ptolemy; the name Eleutheropolis dates from the Syrian visit of Septimius Severus (A.D. Eusebius in his Onomasticon uses it as a central point from which the distances of other towns are measured.
It was destroyed in 796, rebuilt by the crusaders in 1134 (their fortress and chapel remain, much ruined).
