Elevator surfing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With origins in urban exploration, elevator surfing is an activity (some would call it an extreme sport) involving moving around on top of elevators.
Surfers can be crushed between the elevator and the top, sides, or bottom of the shaft, be struck by the counterweight, or simply slip off the elevator (or be knocked off by a passing elevator) and fall to their deaths.
Elevator surfing typically occurs in skyscrapers or on college campuses, especially those with tall buildings.

The students made their way into the elevator shaft by forcing the lock, and without knowing it, accidentally disabled the “tape switch” - which is a special switch that tells the elevator where it is relative to each floor.
Kohr mentions that in the Texas case of car surfing, the victim was thrown free and “landed with an initial upright impact on the heels of both feet.
