Eleventh Dream Day are the perfect "elder statesman" band.
Listening to Eleventh Dream Day can be a sublime and envigorating experience, but all too often the details slip away.
No longer an active live ensemble, Eleventh Dream Day clearly feels less of a need to limit their compositions to what they can reproduce on stage, resulting in sweeping visions of mature -- but undeniably Midwestern -- rock.

As this moody, oblique album takes hold, it's hard to shake the sensation that Eleventh Dream Day feel as if they were being laid to rest.
The barflies and working-class losers who inhabit their songs (those characters being the band's most overt debt to country) are consigned to those margins by chance -- the members of Eleventh Dream Day by choice.
Relying on the meaning of sound rather than lyrics (they're printed on the CD itself, which makes it impossible to follow along while listening), Eleventh Dream Day seem to be using music as a security check.

Eleventh Dream Day are one of the classic “underrated” bands in indie history, victim to an uncaring major label and unlucky circumstance.
Eleventh Dream Day were actually instrumental in laying the groundwork for our present-day indie rock world, where bands like Yo la Tengo can tour the world and release records reliably.
Eleventh Dream Day may have had some of their fortune squandered by an uncaring major (Modest Mouse’s current difficulties with Sony suggest that some things never change), but this release is a testament to the band’s initial promise.

Day was a textbook study in alt-rock endurance; despite a nightmarish major-label tenure, ill-timed roster changes, and commercial indifference, the group persevered, ultimately emerging as elder statesmen of the flourishing Chicago independent scene of the mid-'90s.
Eleventh Dream Day's origins dated to 1981, when singer/guitarist Rick Rizzo met vocalist/drummer Janet Beveridge Bean at the University of Kentucky.
Following a hiatus that allowed Rizzo and Bean to concentrate on raising their newborn child, Eleventh Dream Day enlisted co-producers Brad Wood and John McEntire (McCombs' partner in the post rock supergroup Tortoise) for 1994's Ursa Major, released on City Slang.

Eleventh Dream Day have been around since 1983, when their alternative rock spirit and energy sounded as underground as the Ramones but with a fine sense for melodic layers that stood them in good stead for the cool crowd.

That doesn't matter too much, as what the word wants has come around again to what Eleventh Dream Day always offered - guitars, songs and a chunk of passion.
