Elf (2003) - Ninth Symphony Films Review
Given the weak nature of the plot (calling it predictable is an understatement), the fact that Ferrell is able to carry the film to its conclusion without allowing audience members to lose interest in the story is a testament to his genuine comic ability.
Zooey Deschanel is probably the only actor who is overly burdened with the worst dialogue of the film, and because her character is not a comedic one, she has an especially hard task in bringing her character to life.
Elf is, most obviously, a vehicle for its lead star, and with Ferrell's generosity and warmth, he improves the lackluster script (probably inserting some off-the-cuff material of his own) and allows his character to be as visually funny as he is verbally entertaining.

Elf (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elf is a 2003 Christmas-themed comedy film directed by Jon Favreau and released in the US on November 7, 2003.
Elf begins with narration by "Papa Elf" (played by Bob Newhart), explaining the only three jobs available to an elf, which are making shoes for the shoe cobbler, baking cookies inside of trees (which is dangerous in the dry season) and working in Santa's workshop.
Much of the film's comedy arises from Buddy's lack of knowledge about "normal" human behavior and the conflicts between his naïve, merry attitude and the hostile attitude of many New Yorkers.

Not only is "Elf" presented in its widescreen theatrical aspect of 1.85:1 on disc 1 but for those poor souls who unfortunately still prefer a fullframe edition you’ll be happy to know that they placed it on disc 2.
Being the case that this is a Christmas story, the entire film is filled with gorgeous colors that contrast with the white bleak surroundings of New York.
Because this film is predominately shot in brightly lit environments, the lighting brings out all the natural tones in the actors faces.

 Filmtracks: Elf (John Debney)
Elf: (John Debney) In a project perfectly constructed for composer John Debney, Elf is a personality-driven urban fantasy film with plenty of fluff to go around.
The film begins with three cues of this theme, all with sleigh bells ringing, tambourines slapping, and a business-like snare keeping a steady pace for the "whistle while you work" inspired theme.
Chimes, bells, and a chorus are joined by a noble trumpet for the proceedings, and with the cute nature and diverse instrumentation of this whistling theme, you almost wish the whole film was located in the North Pole.

 Elf DVD Reviewed on AudioVideoRevolution.com
However, “Elf” is surprisingly smart and unself-conscious – it doesn’t wink or preach at the audience.
Directed by Jon Favreu from a script by David Berenbaum, “Elf” has a wealth of wit and charm that is bolstered by its lack of fake sentiment and its matter-of-fact approach to its outrageous premise.
Examining why the comedy of “Elf” works so well turns out to be a remarkably cerebral process – underneath its daffy skin, there’s something powerful here about culture clash and acceptance, though it’s never addressed directly – but it’s not necessary to subject the movie to any scrutiny in order to enjoy it ginormously.

Elf tries so hard to be a holiday classic, to be a sweet-natured, charming little piece of holiday gloss, it's tempting to declare it so and simply go with it.
Elf may be no more than a pleasant, amusing trifle, a grin that fades well before Thanksgiving, but it also will endure in the way all decent Hollywood-made Christmas fairy tales last if they're rendered with good cheer and good will.

 Elf - The Hollywood News
Elf sticks with a fairly predictable “fish out of water” story much of the time, and it doesn’t do a lot to reinvent that genre.
Elf works best when we spend time with the different personalities, so the increased focus on action and tension makes the movie sag.
These include an elf hockey game as well as extensions to segments like the one in which Papa Elf spills the beans about Buddy’s past, Walter’s meeting with a nun over financial strains, Buddy and Leon the Snowman, and Buddy’s first night at the Hobbs home.

Of course, Buddy the Elf (Ferrell) is too good-natured and full of Christmasy love and, I don't know, wide-eyed charming naiveté to think about the size of his jock strap.
Elf has little kick-in-the-pants moments of sneaky fun and a couple of moments of smarter-than-the-average-reindeer wit.
The real standouts of Elf are Deschanel, who-if that is her voice-should quit this acting stuff (or at least limit it to only the very best movies) and go be Rosemary Clooney, and Newhart, who could stutter-and-deadpan his way through the phone book and still get laughs.

While the story is somewhat simplistic, the film has a lot of heart and should be a perennial classic during the holiday seasons to come; it is one of the best holiday films to come out in a few years.
While the film does not contain an overly aggressive mix, as most of the audio is focused on the front speakers, the film’s audio is balanced well and suffers from no noticeable problems; the dialogue, sound effects and music can be heard evenly and in good clarity.
The next featurette, ‘Film School for Kids’, serves as a documentary on the making of the film with various crew members offering up their own takes on the shooting; again, this is an enjoyable and informative piece.

Told as a story by Papa Elf (Newhart), Buddy (Ferrell) was a healthy baby boy who stole away in Santa Claus’s goodie bag while he was working and was taken to the magical place at the North Pole where all the toys are built from.

These films are usually full of sentimental prattle about the spirit of Christmas (which starts out in short supply and, by the end, gushes in Niagara proportions), coupled with a cynicism that would put Scrooge to shame: a have-it-both ways exercise in which extremes cancel each other out.
But it's a surprisingly enjoyable movie, a film that manages to be sweet, daggy and disarming, with a few sly asides and wry gags that never overwhelm the essential warmth of screenwriter David Bernenbaum's story.
Elf is comfortable with his naivete, and, refreshingly, never seems to feel it has to undercut it.

Elf does regurgitate many of the typical Christmas cliches (a snowy New York, a hard-nosed businessman learning the meaning of the season, one person trying to make everyone else believe) but with the emphasis on comedy, it comes up trumps.

Some family films attempt originality; this one, written by first-timer David Berenbaum and directed by Jon Favreau, is happy to rely on familiar devices, confident that the performances and good-natured holiday cheerfulness will bolster it.
In fact, there is a noticeable decrease in the film's buoyancy when he is not on the screen, as the story falls back to earth, its unoriginal roots becoming more obvious.
