Elf (movie) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elf is a 2003 American comedy film written by David Berenbaum and directed by Jon Favreau.
As Elf begins, an infant in an orphanage crawls into Santa 's sack of toys one Christmas and is accidentally taken to the North Pole.

A combination of classic Christmas tales, Elf is the story of Buddy, an orphaned baby who crawls into Santa's toy bag and ends up being raised by elves as one of their own in the North Pole.
Like the aspiring dentist elf in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Buddy sets off to his version of the Island of Misfit Toys, Manhattan, but his dreams of a sugarplum-filled reunion turn sour when his dad, Walter ( James Caan), turns out to be a Grinch-like curmudgeon more concerned with money then anything else.
Elf 's opening North Pole sequence are by far the film's best, with the lofty Buddy, somewhere in his 30s, still not fully comprehending that he is not an elf.

Those of parental age will immediately recognize a cameo appearance by a seasonal Burl Ives character that, even though Ives' is long gone and no effort has been made to recreate the sound of Frosty the Snowman's voice, should bring a smile to (your) faces.

Papa Elf tells him the truth about his birth parents, including the further traumatizing fact that his real father ( James Caan) is on Santa's "naughty list." Following this, Buddy sets out (via the candy-cane forest, the gum-drop sea, and the Lincoln Tunnel) to NYC to find his father (his birth mother is deceased).
This is not a detriment; a Christmas movie should be touching—even the darkly funny Scrooged has its sappy quotient, as do old goodies like It's a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street, both of which get props in Elf.
The movie is certainly predictable, but even the predictability gives you that warm feeling, as though the plot turns—Buddy falling in love with a sweet young woman ( Zooey Deschanel), Buddy getting drunk for the first time (hilarious!)—are as welcome and expected as the traditions of the Christmas season itself.

Although the plot is a bit thin and predictably unoriginal, its significance of serving as a thespian playground for Ferrell to display his slapstick brand of oafish shenanigans mustn't be overlooked.
That clichéd script pops back up again as Buddy soon discovers that he is not actually an elf, but rather a human with a father (James Caan) living in New York City with his second wife (Mary Steenburgen) and their son (Daniel Tay).
I know Elf is for the kids and the story is truthfully quite stupid, but as it is, Elf is a pleasantly charming surprise fueled by an elf's diet of Spaghetti, chocolate pop-tarts and maple syrup.

There's an edge to that part of the movie that is sadly missing from the rest of it.
But the movie's appeal is limited, and, in the end, just about the only thing Elf has going for it is the time of year when it's being released.

The movie is charming, it is cute, it is funny and most importantly of all it is a Christmas movie and deserves a release more appropriate like December.
Yes, the movie carries a lot of the clichés you would expect in a movie dealing with Santa and Elves and goes for that all over warm feeling but that in no way distracts the movie from being one of the funnier comedies released in the last few years.
The movie is a refreshing and wonderful tribute to what comedy can be in movies and I am glad I saw it and that it was made.

Elf manages to succeed where so many other potential holiday classics (see Santa Claus the Movie or Ron Howard's How the Grinch Stole Christmas) failed.
Elf is also stunning to look at, particularly during the North Pole sequences which appear inspired by those classic Rankin and Bass holiday specials.
Elf does falter a tad in it's final act, and the obvious Caan transformation from semi Scrooge to Christmas loving family man takes place too fast to be as plausible as it could have been.

How to make A movie off of such a series of thirteen books (eleven, at the present), which are deceivingly simple, yet filled with so many angles and hidden messages, symbolism, and very literary I will admit, is definitely a challenge.
The movie also adds in a subplot that the first three books do not possess, but that the later ones (according to my brother) do, so I was a bit bothered by having that element ruined if i choose to read more of the series.

Elf 's appeal hinges largely on your feelings towards Will Ferrell, the aging Saturday Night Live alumnus cavorting on the movie's poster.
Disheartened by his large size and finally clued into the fact that he is not, in actuality, an elf, he sets out from the North Pole to find his biological father (James Caan) who has become -- you'll never guess -- a Scrooge-like workaholic obsessed with money.
Elf also sports too many plot threads for its slight frame to handle: Buddy finds a love interest (Zooey Deschanel), his dad has to fend off a sour-pussed corporate boss (Michael Lerner), and there's some weak material involving Santa's sleigh that forms the crux of the film's jumbled finale.
