Elf Power empowers indie - Features
A checklist for those attending tonight's Elf Power show: tension (to be melted away), socks (to be rocked off), five bucks (to be handed to the fellow at the door) and hallucinogens (self-explanatory).
Elf Power has been making music for a solid decade, and has made songs that echo The Flaming Lips, The Beatles and Sonic Youth, though they've built upon these sounds and added synth, fuzz and poor recording equipment to make that trademark indie sound.
Elf Power is music to make you think, or sleep, or dance in place, depending on what kind of condition your condition is in.

Elf Power   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Over the past half-decade, Athens, Georgia-based Elf Power has evolved into one of the giants of the much-revered/maligned Elephant Six Collective (the loose-knit clan of indie rock outfits distinguished by their fondness for the fey retro sounds of The Beach Boys and The Kinks and their appreciation for analog recording techniques).
Elf Power was founded by muli-instrumentalists and vocalists Andrew Rieger and Laura Carter, who issued their debut, the extremely lo-fi Vainly Clutching at Phantom Limbs, on Arena Rock in 1995.
Two years later, Elf Power returned with their landmark A Dream in Sound, for which they recruited acclaimed Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann, who did a great job bringing out the plaintive, poignant psychedelic pop buried beneath the group's fuzzed-out, lo-fi veneer.

Elf Power's last record, 2000's The Winter is Coming, suggested that the band was moving toward a long, frigid season of self-indulgent, Black Sabbath-aping prog metal.
In other words, this is Elf Power at their simplest, their poppiest and quite possibly their best.
While Rieger's fanciful lyrics suggest that Elf Power is still only a couple of late-night Dungeons and Dragons sessions away from recording a quadruple album based on The Silmarillion, the group seems to have found an appropriate balance between willful strangeness and indie-rock accessibility.

But now these Elf Power kids got a new album, and though I hate to say it, I might as well be frank: it sorta sucks.
Problem is, where Elf Power previously made every extra instrument sound like an essential part of their songs, here, these things just sound like last-minute additions aimed at making one song sound remotely different from the next.
After all, I know what rejection feels like, and Elf Power's been through a few tough breaks of their own lately-- what with bigshot producer Dave Fridmann moving on to greener pastures with Mogwai and former member Bryan Poole leaving the band to rock out with the drummer of Jucifer.

On their sixth album, Walking with the Beggar Boys, the former Elephant 6 collective member, Elf Power, has traded in their whimsical psych for broken-backed alt-country, and the trade seems to have left them bereft of ideas.
Their songs are as instantly appealing as ever, but too-deep inspection shows their floorboards are cheap planks of country plywood; there’s no gorgeous hardwood underneath those tattered carpets, friends, so don’t even think about stripping them up.
