Elfenland is a German-style board game designed by Alan R. Moon and published by Amigo Spiele in German and Rio Grande Games in English in 1998.
It won the Spiel des Jahres in 1998 and the Deutscher Spiele Preis 3rd place 1998.
All of the aspects of the game make for a very exciting race to visit the most cities while never quite being sure who is winning until the last round.

You and your fellow elves travel across Elfenland by several modes of transportation through varying terrain.
By paying close attention to the tiles your opponents select, you can maximize the use of your transportation cards by choosing whether or not to follow their route.
I enjoy Elfenland most with either 5 or 6 players because it increases player interaction and because you are less assured of creating the perfect route to travel.

 Elfenland Review
Some players will miss the layered strategies and more aggressive style of the original, but Elfenland's greater accessibility to the masses (in both quality and quantity) is a fair trade-off.
That's changed in Elfenland with the addition of caravans, which allow you to play any three cards to travel on a road regardless of which transportation counter is there.
Elfenland's reception has been marred by the lack of a definitive rule set.

This is very much a gut feeling, and I'd need to play a lot more to see if it is a decisive factor, but it appears Elfenland is slightly less skilful than its predecessor and, perhaps, this is a symptom of being designed as an out and out family game.

In Elfenland, your goal is for your elf visit as many (of 20) cities as possible in the course of 4 turns.
In Elfenland, the idea is to travel around the map (beautifully rendered by the fantabulous Doris Matthäus) and visit as many of the twenty cities depicted as possible as part of a coming of age trial for young elves.
The allure of Elfenland (and Elfenroads) is in solving the traveling salesman problem that is constructed each turn by the interaction of the players.

 Billabong Boardgamers: Elfenland/Elfengold review
This is much of what gives Elfenland a lot of its ability to be replayed, as you try to work out better strategies each time.
Elfengold removes a great deal of the luck that appears in the base game of Elfenland; your transport cards are drawn from one of three face-up piles, and the transport tiles are auctioned off to the highest bidder.
For those who liked Elfenland but would have preferred a more strategic variant, Elfengold is definitely for you.

The general idea behind Elfenland is to try and visit all 20 cities on the map in 4 rounds.
Players have two parts to their turn: playing down marker on the roads on the board; then using the cards in their hand to match the markers which allows them to travel on that road.

We played with the recent Elfengold expansion, which effectively turns Elfenland into the older and rarer Elfenroads, but with a couple of additional features.
The 'meat' of Elfenroads is there, with the addition of gold for visiting cities, and this gold is used for bidding on chits, rather than drafting them as in Elfenland.

Well, Elfenland is a board game, and a rather big one at that, so the game obviously isn't going to be as good a bargain, but it is an even better game.

King of the Elves' strength is that the 'board' always changes, but the strength of Elfenland is that because of the travel markers and your opponents' opportunities to play them, each time you play, you must have a totally different approach.
