Topic: Elfland

In the News (Sat 26 Dec 09)

  Elfland
Elfland was the famous forest up above the U.C. Santa Cruz campus.
Some people would go up there and construct shrines for others to find later during psychedelic journeys, others would camp there for a night or two to get away from the chaos in the dorms.
Technically, the center of Elfland still exists, but it is now right near the back walls of College Nine (or is it College 10?), which makes it a very different place.

Divine Right Variant: The Elven Black Prince
He has nurturing his hatred of the other kingdoms of Minaria, particularly the goblins of Nithmere, but the realities of exile, and the exorbitant costs of maintaining his lifestyle and his followers' equipment, have forced him to occasionally join sides in the common border skirmishes and minor wars of plunder that frequently beset Minaria.
This is not as far fetched as it seems, for many of the arrogant elves secretly cling to the ideals of racial superiority, as would rally to the old royal blood if the opportunity arose.
The Elfland monarch counter must be removed from play, and may only return to play if the Black Prince is later killed or captured.

The King of Elfland might have started by driving off all the changing things beyond his desired view much as the Freer does over the course of the book, although this story presumably took place prior to our story and is not told.
She is at least the equal in power to the king of elfland, and as decisive in her wishes as this King and the Freer.
In this view of The King of Elfland's Daughter, the importance of the otherworld magic - and the significance of maintaining a semi-permeable border between Erl and Elfland - is secondary to the importance of the magic in the fields YOU KNOW.

The King of Elfland's Daughter by Lord Dunsany - an infinity plus review
As though magic were not the spice and essence of life, its ornament and splendour." Elfland itself is a world of intoxication, a place 'beyond the fields we know' where time runs slower and the wonder of existence is perpetually immanent.
Dunsany's Elfland is not so much a real place as a state of being, the ability to see heaven in every grain of sand.
Elfland is only a condition of our world and has little autonomy.

The King of Elfland’s Daughter is Dunsany at his best, able to combine ancient mythological tropes with a unique love of the weird and incredible.
Dunsany spends one chapter on this journey, then gets to the real point of his story, which is what happens when a girl from Elfland is forced to live in the mortal world, and what happens when the two worlds collide.
Part of the power of The King of Elfland’s Daughter is that it is so very different from what many have come to understand as fantasy.
