Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin and 11th Earl of Kincardine (July 20, 1766 - November 14, 1841) was a British nobleman and diplomat, notorious for the removal of marble sculptures from the Parthenon in Athens -- popularly known as the Elgin Marbles.
Elgin was ambassador to the Ottoman Empire between 1799 and 1803.
On his return to Britain, Elgin, finding that he could not get the British Museum to pay what he was asking for the marbles, sued his wife's lover for an appropriately high sum.

Elgin is at the intersection of U.S. Highway 290 and State Highway 95, fifteen miles north of Bastrop in north Bastrop County.
The name was changed to Elgin, in honor of the railroad's land commissioner and surveyor, Robert Morris Elgin, on August 18, 1872, when the town was officially platted.
Elgin was incorporated and received a post office the following year, and a Baptist Sunday school began meeting in a private home.

The Elgin Theatre Company (ETC), known until July 1, 2005, as the Elgin Community Theatre, was founded in the spring of 1952 as an evening adult education class at Elgin Community College (ECC).
During the 1970's and early 1980's ETC produced the Elgin Summer Youth Theatre for the City of Elgin.
One of several awards given, over the years, to the Elgin Theatre Company by the Elgin Cultural Arts Commission for its "valuable contributions to culture and arts in Elgin." This award was present to ETC on May 1, 1996, by then Mayor Kevin Kelly at a ceremony held in Lords Park.
