Elgin (Scottish Gaelic: Eilginn) is a former cathedral city and a former Royal Burgh in Moray, Scotland and is the administrative and commercial centre for Moray.
Elgin was a popular residence to the early Scottish monarchs; David I, William I, Alexander II and Alexander III all held their courts there and enjoyed the hunting in the royal forests.
Elgin is in the Moray (Westminster) constituency of the The United Kingdom Parliament which returns a Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons,[1] at Westminster.

Moray (pronounced Murray, spelled A Moireibh in Gaelic) is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland.
The Moray council area was created in 1996, under the Local Government etc. (Scotland) Act 1994, with the boundaries of the former Moray district of the two-tier Grampian region.
The Moray district had been formed by combining the local government county of Moray, except Grantown-on-Spey and Cromdale areas, with Aberlour, Buckie, Cullen, Dufftown, Findochty, Keith and Portknockie areas of the county of Banff.

Most of Elgin's buildings were erected after the suppression of the Jacobite Risings of the 18th century, but a few earlier structures include Alexander Leslie's 17th-century Tower, Braco's Banking House (1684), and Thunderton House, built in the 16th century as a 'Great Lodging' of the Scottish kings to replace the castle.
Elgin Academy, originally founded in 1566, moved to its present site in the 1960s and a College of Further Education erected on the site occupied by the school since 1885.
