Elgin was first settled by Joseph Hall in 1800 and as others came to live nearby became known as Hall Town.
Elgin was not on a state road, but continued to offer a pleasant life to those residents who worked there or nearby.
Elgin's main street, running east and west is Pleasant Street, a fine name for a small community.

The street in Sommer's Addition bounding Blocks 4, 5 and 6 on the north and Main Street in Thompson's Addition and the extension to and including "D" Street in Hindman's Addition, and Main Street in Elgin Addition, are changed to Alder Street.

It isn't obvious from a modern map, but for much of recorded history Elgin was isolated from the rest of Scotland; with the Cairngorms to the south and protected by two unbridged and often uncrossable rivers, the Spey to the east and the Findhorn to the west.
Elgin probably existed in 1040 when King Duncan's army met and lost to Macbeth at Pitgaveney, a mile north east of the modern city.
Elgin now boasts a new railway station, and these days the run from Aberdeen to Inverness takes nearer two hours than four.

Elgin became incorporated in 1889 with a population of 421.
According to an 1894 copy of the "Elgin Advance" newspaper (now the "Elgin Review"), Elgin had one church for both Methodists and Presbyterians "...using the building on alternate Sundays." There was also a Union Sabbath School every Sunday, with prayer meeting during the week.
Fondly remembered are the open-air street dances held from 1934-54, with name bands such as Jimmy Barnett, Paul Moorhead, etc. Attendance of 1,000 or more was common with admission being 25 cents for men, 10 cents for women.

 Canada Atlantic Railway Elgin Street Station
A sixth track across Elgin street from the south edge of the freight yard gave access to the enclosed Isabella Street coal trestle on the west bank of the canal.
Because of the complexity of the trackwork across Elgin Street, it was eventually necessary to install barrier gates, which appear in a 1900 photograph, as well as a high watchman's tower to guard the crossing, visible in the same photo.
In our article on the Elgin Street station in the February 2004 Branchline we mentioned that service between Ottawa and Arnprior over the Ottawa, Arnprior and Parry Sound Railway commenced on 13 May 1893 and mentioned that a second west facing stub track was added at the station to serve this route.

The Elgin businessmen had been informed that if they wanted the company to be located in Elgin they would have to donate 35 acres of land.
Elgin and most other watch companies sold their movements to wholesaler’s who then sold them to the jewelry shops.
It was sold by Elgin National Industries in 1972, but a small watch repair operation continued to occupy it.

Elgin was founded as a royal burgh by David I in the 12th century.
The main street of the burgh, High Street, runs from east to west along a ridge, with the ground falling off to the north towards the River Lossie.
Areas 1-4 lie to the north of the High Street, 5-7 to the south, Area 8 encompasses the cathedral and its precinct, and 9 the eastern approaches to the burgh.
