  Elgin National Watch Company - 1903
The National Watch Company of Chicago, Illinois was incorporated on August 27, 1864 with a capital of $100,000.
In September of 1864 a visit was made by some company representatives to the Waltham Watch Co. and seven of their key people where lured away to work for the newly formed company and they were nicknamed the Seven Stars.
At that time watches took six months to complete and the B. Raymond model sold for $117 at a time when pork chops sold for three cents a pound (several years ago this watch was bought at auction by the city of Elgin for $15,000).

The company sold it in 1965, and it was razed in 1965-66.
Watch production was now centered in South Carolina, and this was the site of the casing, fitting, shipping, service, and trade material departments as well as offices.

Elgin was not known for making the highest quality watches, though some of their higher grades were exquisitely made timepieces.
Elgin watches remain extremely popular with collectors today because they are plentiful, can be obtained at reasonable prices, and can be relatively easily repaired due to the large number of watches and parts available.
Elgin shipped their first wristwatch in 1910, and later manufactured the first wrist watch to be qualified for railroad service, the grade 730A B. Raymond.

Watches are one of the few machines that were made 50 or even 150 years ago that, even today, can still be practical to use every day.
The first watch Elgin made, an 18 sized B W Raymond railroad grade watch, was finished in 1867 and over the next 100 years, they went on to produce about 60 million watches.
Elgin realized that there was a large market for good watches that could be sold and repaired relatively cheaply using factory made replacement parts that didn't require hand adjusting.

The idea of beginning a large watch company for the mid-West was discussed by J.C. Adams, Bartlett and Blake.
The company produced the only self-winding (automatic) wristwatch movement ever made in the United States in the calibers 760 and 761 (30 and 27 jewels resepctively).
The rights to the name "Elgin" were sold to MZ Berger, but Elgin-branded watches produced after 1964 have no other connection to Elgin or the Elgin Watch Company.

 The Elgin National Watch Company Observatory
What is today known as the Elgin U-46 Planetarium began life in 1910 as the Elgin National Watch Company Observatory.
In order to maintain its position as a leading manufacturer of timepieces, the Elgin National Watch Company decided to build an observatory that would measure time more accurately than any other facility in the U.S. The observatory was sited on the top of a hill just east of the watch factory.
As a result, the Elgin National Watch Company closed the doors to its Observatory in 1958.

The Illinois Watch Case Company was another major manufacture in the city of Elgin Illinois.
About 50 years later, when watch companies started selling cased watches, ENWCo went out and bought the Wadsworth Watch Case Company of Kentucky, even though it might have made more sense to buy the IWCCo, which was just down the street.
In 1901, the court ruled in favor of IWCCo and said that the name "Elgin" could not be trademarked since it was a geographical description and existed before the watch company.

 Elgin National Watch Company (Father Time Vignette) - 1903
This item is hand signed (with a Star Cancellation) by the company’s president (Charles H. Hulbund) and secretary and is over 103 years old.
An observatory at 312 Watch Street, Elgin, Illinois, was constructed in 1909-10 to time watches by the stars.
It was sold by Elgin National Industries in 1972, but a small watch repair operation continued to occupy it.
