		The Elgin Marbles, some of which are now housed in the British Museum, were originally taken from Athens by the noble family whose title, the Earls of Elgin, is derived from the name of this burgh.

		Thomas Bruce, 7th Earl of Elgin and 11th Earl of Kincardine (July 20, 1766 - November 14, 1841) was a British nobleman and diplomat, notorious for the removal of marble sculptures from the Parthenon in Athens -- popularly known as the Elgin Marbles.
		Elgin was ambassador to the Ottoman Empire between 1799 and 1803.
		On his return to Britain, Elgin, finding that he could not get the British Museum to pay what he was asking for the marbles, sued his wife's lover for an appropriately high sum.

		The Elgin Theatre Company (ETC), known until July 1, 2005, as the Elgin Community Theatre, was founded in the spring of 1952 as an evening adult education class at Elgin Community College (ECC).
		During the 1970's and early 1980's ETC produced the Elgin Summer Youth Theatre for the City of Elgin.
