Eli Biham and Rafi Chen, of the Israel Institute of Technology, have found two near-collisions of the full compression function of SHA-0 (see http://www.cs.technion.ac.il/~biham/publications.html).
The SHA-0 algorithm, introduced by the NSA in 1993, is known to be insecure; in 1995 the NSA published SHA-1, citing a weakness in SHA-0, which it did not disclose.
However, Biham and Chen have indicated that "Our new improvements also allowed us to analyze reduced variants of SHA-1...[although] at the current state of research, our attacks are not expected to break the full SHA-1." SHA-1 is widely used in encryption programs such as PGP, and is also used in the SSL protocol.

It is based on a technique due to Eli Biham of the Technion that takes advantage of 64-bit registers, with substantial improvements developed at Hewlett Packard.
Biham's algorithm does an S-box look up as a straightforward DES implementation would, but the look up produces a 64-bit array, mostly filled with zeros, rather than a 4-bit array.
With this implementation, Biham achieved a throughput of 46 Mb/s for DES and 22 Mb/s for Triple-DES on a 300 MHz Alpha 8400 processor.

Biham, Barkan, and Keller's discovery involved a basic flaw in the encryption system of the GSM (global system for mobile communications) network, which is used by 71 percent of all cellphones.
Biham explained that encryption ciphers were kept absolutely secret until 1999 when a researcher called Marc Briceno succeeded to reverse engineer their algorithms.
Biham was not aware of any clever thief who has already used the fault to cheat phone users, but 'any failure like this could eventually be discovered and used for illegal purposes.

This is possible thanks to a flaw in the GSM code, explained Professor Eli Biham of the Technion Institute of Technology in Haifa.
Prof Biham explained that by picking up a phone call in progress - easily done - and then reading the error correction codes, it is possible to piece together the encrypted parts of a phone conversation together within a fraction of a second.
Biham explained that for the problem to be eliminated, a lot of the hardware in the network would have to be changed and something done to every single phone.

 U.S. Group Delays Encryption Standard
The flaw was discovered by Eli Biham, a well-known cryptographer at the Technion research institution in Israel, and by Lars Knudsen at the University of Bergen in Norway.
As a result of the distribution of the paper within the subcommittee, it decided to drop the vulnerable mode of the proposed standard, said the chairman, Blake Greenlee.
The subcommittee that is evaluating the standards is known as X9.F1, and it oversees the development of new cryptographic tools.

In a presentation Tuesday evening, however, Biham reported some early work toward identifying vulnerabilities in the SHA-1 algorithm, which is believed to be secure.
Biham's presentation was very preliminary, but it could call into question the long-term future of the wildly popular SHA-1 algorithm and spur researchers to identify alternatives.
