Elias James Corey - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elias James Corey (born July 12, 1928) is an American organic chemist.
Corey has gained a certain infamy in the field of chemistry for having two graduate students commit suicide and explicitly blame their advisor (Corey) for doing so.
At the end, Jason must have been delusional or irrational in the extreme." Corey also is on record as stating that he never questioned Mr.

Harvard chemist wins national award for lifetime contributions to science, medicine
Elias J. Corey, Ph.D., of Cambridge, Mass., will be honored March 30 by the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society, for decades of achievement, such as developing simple, logic-based rules and strategies to assemble complex compounds for medicines and a host of other products.
Corey and his research team have made thousands of complex chemical structures, often compounds found in nature and recreated in the laboratory for study as possible drugs to treat disease.
Corey's approach of mentally dissecting complex molecules into simple building blocks, and the step-by-step process to knit them back together, is an idea he traces to childhood.

Corey's "approach to science is supplemented with a strict discipline, a systematic approach to learning, and the courage to plunge into uncharted areas," says K. Nicolaou, a former postdoc and now a chemistry professor at Scripps Research Institute.
Corey was at Illinois from 1951 to mid-1959.
Corey works only on difficult problems, expects his coworkers to pour their hearts into seeking solutions just as he does, and is satisfied only with innovative solutions.

Corey has a clear memory of the events of that month, which he says disturbed him greatly -- and the following account was drawn from a series of letters he wrote to Hoffmann in the 1980s and a recent interview in his Harvard office.
Corey, then 35, was working into the evening on Monday, May 4, as he and the other driven chemists often did.
Scientists interviewed widely believed that Corey was telling the truth, but some said that Woodward had a habit of posing questions to which he knew the answer, meaning he could have already devised a solution when he asked Corey about ring formation.

Elias James Corey was a whiz kid from Methuen who wrote his doctoral thesis in four weeks, earned a PhD at age 22 and was made a full professor at 27.
Corey went on to show how this method could be enhanced by computer programming, developing a process of computer synthetic planning that "is developing rapidly," the academy said.
Today, Corey said, his students and postdoctoral fellows are working on 20 to 25 projects, including "molecular robots," enzyme-like chemicals that pick up one chemical ingredient and attach it to another to create a synthetic compound.
