esearch in the Corey group spans a number of areas of experimental organic and bioorganic chemistry and also includes a program on the application of computers to organic problems.
The total synthesis of a wide range of complex structures is the central research activity.

Elias James Corey was a whiz kid from Methuen who wrote his doctoral thesis in four weeks, earned a PhD at age 22 and was made a full professor at 27.
Corey went on to show how this method could be enhanced by computer programming, developing a process of computer synthetic planning that "is developing rapidly," the academy said.
Today, Corey said, his students and postdoctoral fellows are working on 20 to 25 projects, including "molecular robots," enzyme-like chemicals that pick up one chemical ingredient and attach it to another to create a synthetic compound.

Professor Corey (to colleagues and friends, E.J.) is known for his many spectacular contributions to synthetic organic chemistry.
Corey has received many honors, including the Wolf Prize (1986), the National Medal of Science (1988), the Japan Prize in Medicinal Science (1989) and the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (1990).
Born in Massachusetts, Corey obtained the Ph.D. at M.I.T. (1951), was on the faculty at the University of Illinois (1951-59) where he became full professor at the early age of 27, and since 1959 he has been professor at Harvard.

Corey was born in Methuen, Mass., and educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In 1967 he produced one of three prostaglandin families, later developing the Corey lactone aldehyde, from which prostaglandins, hormonelike chemicals, in all three families could be synthesized.
Corey was awarded the 1990 Nobel Prize in chemistry for his “development of the theory and methodology of organic synthesis.”

Elias James Corey of Harvard won the prize in chemistry for basic research that revolutionized the ability of chemists to create synthetic versions of organic chemicals in the laboratory.
Corey learned about his $700,000 prize from a graduate student as he arrived at his laboratory yesterday morning.
Corey added that he believes the prize was given not to him personally but to the whole field of synthetic chemistry, which he developed and which he called yesterday "an incredibly beautiful intellectual field."

Elias James Corey has been lauded as one of the giants of 20th-century chemistry, and as the father of synthetic organic chemistry.
In 1990, at the age of 62, Corey was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry for his contributions to the development of organic synthesis, a recognition that many of his colleagues said was long overdue.
Corey created synthetic versions of natural body chemicals called prostaglandins, which play a crucial role in inflammation, blood clotting, blood flow, gastrointestinal functions and other biological processes.

Potent cancer drugs made from sea squirts
In May 2000, researchers at Harvard University announced that they had succeeded in synthesizing a complex anti-tumor drug that is more powerful than any other known drug.
The drug, ecteinascidin, is so potent that a mere 11 pounds of it should be enough to satisfy the present world demand for an entire year, Elias J. Corey estimated.
"I believe it's the most complicated molecule ever made on a commercial scale," said Corey, winner of the 1990 Nobel Prize in chemistry, in whose laboratory the compound was first fashioned.

Sea squirt cancer drug under test
The drug derived from sea squirts is so incredibly powerful, only 0.05 ounce is enough to treat 100 patients.
According to Elias J. Corey, Sheldon Emery Professor of Chemistry at Harvard, a mere 11 pounds of the drug would satisfy world demand for about a year.
It's good that it is so powerful, because a harvest of about 95,000 pounds of sea squirts yields a scant 3 ounces of the drug.
