( ELIAS SEELY, an obscure legislator from Cumberland County who served as Governor for seven months in 1833 when Samuel Southard resigned to become a U.S. Senator, has both a portrait and a permanent memorial: Seeley's Pond, most ironically located in DiFrancesco's home town of Scotch Plains.)
Two hospitals named for onetime Governors were eventually knocked down, and the USS Southard, named for former Governor, U.S. Senator and Secretary of the Navy and Secretary of the Treasury (under President JAMES MONROE) and Secretary of War (under President JOHN QUINCY ADAMS) SAMUEL LEWIS SOUTHARD, was commissioned in 1919 and destroyed in 1946.
Of the 54 men and one woman who served as Governor of New Jersey for more than one week, nearly half -- 26 Governors-- have no public facility named to recognize them.
