Elidir Fawr - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elidir Fawr is a mountain in Snowdonia, north Wales, the northernmost in the Glyderau.
To the north of the summit is a small lake, Marchlyn Mawr, which is the upper reservoir for a pump-storage power station hidden innside the mountain itself.
From the north, Elidir Fawr is very prominent, and can appear to be higher than the higher mountains behind it.

This does however have the disadvantage of a slog up Elidir Fawr to begin with.
There are good views along from Elidir Fawr, both to the Snowdon range and also down to Marchlyn Mawr the upper lake in the "Electric Mountain" scheme (described in route 2).

North Wales - Glyder Fawr (Glyderau)
Glyder Fawr is a monster: huge, brooding, and with a complex array of hanging valleys, faces, and ridges.
Although Glyder Fawr cannot quite match its neighbour Glyder Fach in terms of sheer quality of walking, many classic climbs and scrambles run up and down its faces.
Glyder Fawr looks great on the map and from the valley, but to make the most of this mountain you really have to be a climber.

My first attempt was in June 2000 when I had to call it a day after descending Elidir Fawr, it being around 30C in the mid-afternoon.
Y Garn and Elidir Fawr summits where quickly achieved fortunately, and I arrived back to civilization (Nant Peris) around 10am.
On the way I chatted to a walker coming up Elidir Fawr who was vaguely curious that I'd been up so early.

Elidir Fawr seems quite close in this light: a shapely head held slightly aloof by its slender grass neck.
But be warned: this being the lowest col on the ridge, and with the long ascent to Glyder Fawr ahead, the threat to morale is enormous.
Ordinary people are seen to assume the hunted crouch of shot hyena (not the laughing kind) as they jerk and slither through the long, hot afternoon.

From here the route continued to Craig Portas where the temptation to laze in the grass proved too persuasive for some of the group, while the rest made the detour along a very fine ridge to Maesglase 674 metres.
