		The French philosopher and historian Élie Halévy (1870-1937) wrote studies of the British utilitarians and a history of 19th-century England.
		Elie Halévy was born on Sept. 6, 1870, at Étretat, where his mother had fled as the German army marched on Paris.

		Elie Halevy's study of Benthamism and its intellectual genealogy was his first major work, and it formed a bridge that carried the young French philosopher from his early interests in abstract philosophy towards his life's work, a general history of England in the nineteenth century.
		Halevy found this a fruitful tension, and it was the victory of the first over the second strand that ultimately weakened the philosophical radicals' practical effectiveness.
		Halevy scented this ambiguity at the heart of philosophic radicalism, but, instead of trying to fit it into one model or the other, he read it as a creative tension that gave the system much of its practical bite.

		His father, Elie Halfon Halevy was the secretary of the Jewish community of Paris and a Hebrew teacher and writer as well.
		The work that gained Halevy early notice was a liturgical piece commissioned by the Consistoire Israélite du Départment de la Seine, for a public service in memory of the Duke de Berry, in the Jewish community's temple on March 24, 1820: Marche Funebre et De Profundis en Hebreu for three voices and orchestra.
		On its engraved title page, Halevy was described as a member of the Royal Institute of Music and a recipient of the patronage of the King of France at the Academy of Rome.
