Eligius was born at the "villa" of Chaptelat (modern Cadillac?), 6 miles west of (additional info and facts about Limoges) Limoges, in (A region of southwestern France between Bordeaux and the Pyrenees) Aquitaine (now France), into an educated and influential (additional info and facts about Gallo-Roman) Gallo-Roman family.
Eligius was a source of edification at court, where he and his friend Dado (Audoenus) lived according to the strict Irish monastic rule that had been introduced into Gaul by (additional info and facts about Saint Columbanus) Saint Columbanus.
Eligius also erected several fine tombs in honor of the relics of Saint (additional info and facts about Martin of Tours) Martin of Tours, the national saint of the Franks, and (United States dancer and choreographer who collaborated with Ted Shawn (1877-1968)) Saint Denis, who was chosen patron saint by the king.

Eligius took advantage of this to obtain alms for the poor and to ransom Roman, Gallic, Breton, Saxon, and Moorish captives, who were arriving daily at Marseilles.
Eligius introduced this rule, either entirely or in part, into the monastery of Solignac which he founded in 632, and into the convent at Paris where three hundred virgins were under the guidance of the Abbess Aurea.
Eligius is particularly honoured in Flanders, in the province of Antwerp, and at Tournai, Courtrai of Ghent, Bruges, and Douai.

Noted for his piety, hard work and honesty, Eligius was generous to the poor, ransomed slaves (including Saint Tillo of Solignac), built churches, a monastery at Solignac, and major convent in Paris.
The horse became sick, but recovered immediately when it was returned to the priest that Eligius had chosen.
There is also a legend of Eligius removing a horse's leg in order to easy shoe it.

Saint Eligius, who became abbot of Saint Martin's in Tours, France, and spent himself entirely for his abbey (Benedictines, Encyclopedia).
In 567, Godeberta received the veil from Saint Eligius, bishop of Noyon, who also composed a rule for the convent of which she was the first abbess.
It is said that she was a discrete advisor of Saint Eligius (Benedictines, Encyclopedia).
