  Elijah - Mendelssohn
The introduction to be oratorio is prefaced by a brief, but impressive recitative -- Elijah’s prophecy of the drought -- leading directly to the overture, a sombre, despairing prelude, picturing the distress which is to follow as the course settles down upon the streams and valleys.
The dramatic scene of the raising of her son ensues, comprising a passionate song by the mother ("What have I to do with thee?") and the noble declaration of the prophet ("Give me the Son"), and closing with the reflective chorus ("Blessed are the Men who fear Him").
At the words of Elijah ("Invoke your Forest Gods and Mountain Deities") the priest of Baal break out into the stirring double chorus ("Baal, we cry to thee"), which is fairly sensual and heathenish in its rugged, abrupt melodies, as compared with the Christian music.

Mendelssohn toured Europe visiting a number of countries where he sketched musical fragments later to be turned into concert works, which is why a number of his works bear titles suggesting these countries.
Mendelssohn was a complete musician - a pianist, conductor and scholar responsible for the early Bach revival, he wrote symphonies, oratorios, concertos, songs, chamber and piano music, and the memorable incidental music to a Midsummer Night's Dream.

Mendelssohn had another view altogether and wrote, "I would fain see the dramatic element more prominent as well as more exuberant and defined....(T)he dramatic element should predominate." Mendelssohn repeatedly asked for specific scenes and texts to be set and ultimately the libretto was constructed.
Mendelssohn in fact planned to omit the overture altogether since it interfered with the developing story line, but was later persuaded by Bartholomew to add one, placing it, however, after Elijah's introduction.
An angel sends Elijah to the widow of Zarephath ("Elijah, get thee hence.") Elijah's duet with the widow ("What have I to do with thee") provides the first great dramatic moment, when Elijah prays to the Lord three times that her son might be restored to life.

BaylyBlog: Out of our minds, too: Elijah & Mendelssohn
I was struck this time through by Mendelssohn giving the prophets of Baal the most dramatic point in the oratorio musically.
I suspect Mendelssohn was influenced by Elijah meeting God not in the wind, earthquake or fire, but in the low whisper of chapter 19.
One false note intrudes: in the libretto, Elijah cries at the outset of part 16, "Thou, whose ministers are flaming fires: let them now descend!" This is the climactic moment, and at this point drama intrudes for one line in the libretto.

 Divine Art 27802 - Elijah - Mendelssohn
From Elijah’s scene with Ahab, when he challenges the priests of Baal, one knows one is in the presence of a powerful figure: actually two: Elijah and Williams.
Elijah was one of the great warhorses of the amateur choral movement during the previous two centuries, and Columbia’s decision to make a more or less complete recording in 1930 reflected the combination of commercial acumen and artistic good sense that marked out this company from its rivals.
The set was issued on 15 ten-inch discs, so that purchasers could opt for their own individual selections from the great work; and, as the excellent notes accompanying this reissue observe, it remained in the catalogue until 1948, a remarkably long time for a recording from the early days of the electrical era.

Mendelssohn's Elijah - London Orpheus Choir @ Cadogan Hall, London : concert review
The scene where Elijah taunted the priests of Baal (and killed them afterwards) was very convincing, and probably the highlight of the evening.
The furious choir screaming for Baal to answer them, and the calm Elijah who did not worry at all, left a very powerful impression on the audience indeed.
He did bring out the contrasts between the Obadiah who told Elijah to flee ('Man of God, now let my words be precious') and the man who pointed out the depressed Elijah ('See, now he sleepeth beneath a juniper tree').
