SS Elingamite is well known in New Zealand and Australia and among the international diving fraternity despite sinking more than a century ago, because of the drama associated with it, and wild tales of lost treasure.
She was a single screw passenger steamer of about 2500 tons owned by Huddart Parker, engaged on the regular Tasman Sea run between Sydney and Auckland.
Elingamite left Sydney early on Sunday morning of November 9, 1902 with Captain Ernest Atwood in charge.

As early as the 1890's it had been noted by Thomas K Thompson, a Surveyor with the Survey Department that the Three Kings Island group were not correctly charted in relation to Cape Reinga meaning that the nautical maps of the day were incorrect.
The hull of the Elingamite remains where she sank, the playground of divers, treasure seekers and giant groper.
She is relatively undisturbed apart from the occasional detonation of explosive by divers seeking to wrest the treasure which still remains inside her belly...........a treasure which she and the conditions of sea and tide jealously guard even now, almost 100 years after she went down.

Another casualty of the Sydney-Auckland service was the Huddart Parker ship Elingamite, of 2,585 tons, which ran ashore on West Island in the Three Kings Group on 2 November 1902 and sank in 20 minutes with the loss of 45 lives.
Steaming at half-speed through a thick fog, the ship could have been saved at the first sight of land, but for some reason the orders for stopping, or their execution, were delayed until it was too late.
The Elingamite carried 136 passengers and a crew of 58, and 28 passengers and 17 of the crew died from drowning or exposure.

The 'Elingamite' was a steamer of some 2585 tons, operated by the Huddart-Parker Company, and on this occasion was on a voyage from Auckland to Sydney with 136 passengers and a crew of 59, Captain E.B. Atwood commanding.
On the Sunday morning of November 9 the ship was proceeding slowly at 5 knots owing to a dense fog that hid any coast or island from view.
Her cargo included 52 boxes of gold and silver to the official value of 17,320 pounds sterling, which had ben shipped by the Bank of New South Wales in Sydney.

The wreck of the Elingamite is in private ownership and permission to take anything off the wreck is needed before any pillaging is done.
This dive site is definatly for experienced divers only as it is well exposed to the prevailing southwesterly swells and winds not to mention 2 plus knot currents.
