As the Wittelsbach line of Pfalz-Simmern (Palatinate-Simmern) was extinct in 1685, Liselotte's brother-in-law Louis XIV claimed the Palatinate and started the War of the Palatinian Succession (Pfälzer Erbfolgekrieg).
After the death of Louis XIV her son Philipp II of Bourbon (her husband already died in 1701) became Regent of France (1715 - 1723) in place of underage king Louis XV - and Liselotte First Lady of the Kingdom.

Elisabeth Charlotte von der Pfalz (Charlotte Elizabeth, Duchesse d'Orléans), (May 27, 1652 in Heidelberg - 9 October or December 8 1722 in St. Cloud near Paris), a princess of the electoral family of the Rhenish Palatinate, became Duchess of Orleans and sister-in-law of Louis XIV of France.
When the Wittelsbach branch of (Palatinate-Simmern) became extinct in the male line with the death of Liselotte's brother Karl II, Elector Palatine in 1685, her brother-in-law Louis XIV claimed the Palatinate and started the War of the Palatinian Succession (1688 - 1697).
After the deaths of Liselotte's husband in 1710 and of Louis XIV in 1715, her son - Philip II, Duke of Orléans - became Regent of France (1715 - 1723), acting for the underage king Louis XV of France — and Liselotte became known as the First Lady of the Kingdom.
