Elisha Reynolds Potter (1811 - 1882) was an statesman and jurist from Kingston, Rhode Island.
He was a justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, and served one term in the United States House of Representatives.
His father, Elisha Reynolds Potter, had held the same Congressional seat.

Elisha Reynolds Potter was born on June 20, 1811 in the home of his parents, Elisha Reynolds Potter, Sr.
Potter continued these labors in the cause of popular education by the careful selection of books for village libraries, leading the way by establishing, at his own personal cost, such an institution in his native town that was free to the public.
Potter upon the map of Rhode Island made by H. Walling in 1854 and republished in 1855 is one of the most valuable historical works ever done by him.

Foster and Fannie (Potter) Reynolds, grandparents of L.D., were among the pioneers of the county, and located in Hebron about 1830, where Foster engaged in farming, and was a millwright by trade.
L.D. Reynolds engaged in teaching for six years, then in 1885 began the mercantile business at Millport, and in the same year married Hattie L. Eastman, of Wellsboro, Tioga Co., Penn. Two years thereafter he removed to Roulette and established a general merchandise store, where he is conducting a constantly growing business.
George Wiederich was reared in Potter county, and remained on the homestead with his parents until his marriage, after which he took charge of the farm, and at his father’ s death succeeded him in its ownership.

A.M. Grover having been among the early settlers of Potter county, and their means being then limited, they naturally had an active share in the hardships experienced in the pioneer lives of the settlers in the forests of Potter county.
His parents removed to Bingham township, Potter Co., Penn., in 1825, where they remained until 1833, when, with household goods loaded on a wagon, and drawn by three yoke of oxen, they proceeded on their way to what is now Andrews Settlement, named in honor of Levi Andrews.
His parents came to Potter county in the spring of 1835, located in Allegheny township, three miles from the nearest neighbor, and engaged in farming; in 1839 they moved into Eulalia township, where they spent the rest of their lives.

Elisha Scott Loomis, educator, author and man of affairs of Lakewood, was born on a farm in Wadsworth Township, Medina County, this state, September 18, 852, son of the late Charles Wilson and Sarah (Oberholtzer) Loomis.
Elisha S. Loomis, whose life record is very unusual and remarkable, was the eldest of seven brothers, and was but twelve years of age when his father died.
The family soon scattered but Elisha was retained by his mother to assist with the work and to aid her in taking care of the two youngest children.

The first law passed after the adoption of the constitution of 1816 was for the creation of a Supreme Court; the second, defined the powers of the Circuit Court; the third was in relation to suits at law and chancery, and the fourth regulated the jurisdiction of justices of the peace.
Reynolds was judge of the White County Circuit Court from 1888 to 1894 and discharged his duties well; but he was primarily an advocate and at least one instance is related, which occurred during the fIrst year of his judgeship, illustrating that fact.
Reynolds resumed his beloved practice, in which he continued to be actively engaged until stricken by his last illness a few months before his death at his home in Monticello, on the 27th of April, 1913.

              Potter was one of three residents of South Kingstown chosen to attend the Landholders' Convention of 1841, for which he was a member of the Standing Committee on the Subject of Electors and the Right of Suffrage.
Because Potter was influential in political and legal circles his entire life, the collection is also useful, in a political sense, for the latter half of the century, though to a lesser degree.

Like Elisha, his name appears occasionally in early Georgia records that predate census and other records, continuing until perhaps 1802 (later references to an Elijah Gentry in Georgia probably were to Elisha's son).
