Eliska, as she liked to be called, was born in the Moravian town of Olomouc, in a sleepy corner of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the daughter of a flsmith and the sixth of eight children, though only four lived to reach adulthood.
Eliska Junkova later recalled thinking: "If he is going to be the love of my life, then I better learn to love these damned engines." But before long she too became smitten with the beauty of the racing cars on show, especially the Italian-made Bugattis.
By 1926, Eliska Junkova was good enough to compete in races throughout Europe against the best male divers of the age.

Eliska Junkova - who was known in the West as Elizabeth Junek - was probably the greatest woman racer there has ever been.
By 1926 Eliska had decided that she would like to try international competition and she took part in the Klausen hillclimb in Switzerland and finished second in her class.
Eliska Junkova never raced again but she kept in contact with Ettore Bugatti until his death in 1947.

Of course as is my wont, I was distracted and began reading about women in motor racing.
Not just contemporary drives like Danica Patrick, who is disappointed to qualify only fourth at Indianapolis, but drivers from early in the sports history such as Eliska Junkova and Kay Petrie or Hellé Nice who left the Paris demimonde (a future career for me?) to drive for Bugatti and Alfa Romeo.
Anyway I got to Monaco knowing almost nothing about Formula One.
