Elizabeth's climb to power, however, is a personal disaster: the supple-waisted maiden with long red hair becomes stiff and harsh, emerging from her youth white-faced and trapped in the armor of a thick brocade dress.
The princess, as this movie sees her, certainly knew her insecurities about her role in life and in English politics, her people's expectations, and the intrigues of her own court.
The movie begins in 1554, in an England that is bitterly divided on the issue of religion.

Elizabeth (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Elizabeth is a 1998 movie about the early reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England, written by Michael Hirst and directed by Shekhar Kapur.
After her accession, the story mainly concerns the subversive activities of some of Elizabeth's Roman Catholic opponents, notably Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk (played by Christopher Eccleston) and the ongoing conflict with Scotland.
The climax is the discovery by Sir Francis Walsingham (played by Geoffrey Rush) of the dramatized version of the Ridolfi plot (with elements of the Babington plot thrown in) and the mass executions of most of those involved in the plot.

 Steve's 1998 Movie Reviews
Grease has always been a fun movie, but this "remastered" release was a technical let-down, with muddy spoken dialog and a soundtrack too easily overwhelmed by the crooners in the audience.
Many movies rely on special effects (Godzilla, Waterworld) but this is one of that rare breed where the technical wizards are quietly supporting a strong story and interesting characters (Babe, Star Wars).
But the movie mistakenly spends more time with the often-filmed "catch the bad guy" story, and practically ignores the stress and distrust between the public and the occupying army.

 Elizabeth
Elizabeth, portrayed as a vulnerable young lady in the movie, seemed to follow methodically the wisdom and advice of her advisors, and it often seemed that at times they were the ruling leaders of England, taking over all of the duties of the royal ruler.
Elizabeth seemed to be very in love with Dudley, as he with her, and often struggled with her feelings of love for him and the expectations put upon her to marry others for political reasons.
As in the movie, “Elizabeth was deeply hurt and outraged… and only arguments that one could not imprison someone for entering into the state of holy matrimony kept her from sending him to the tower” (Levin 61).

It is not a biopic per se, for it does not chronicle the life of Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett) from start to finish, but it does highlight the most important part of the monarch's life: her rise to power.

This Elizabeth is presented as a glamorously stressed-out modern woman who must cope with a super-intense case of having it all.
Period movies inevitably reflect more about the period in which they're made than the period of their subject, and rarely has that been more evident -- or more distracting -- than it is with Elizabeth.
Bad history it may be, but Elizabeth is a movie that makes you want more, as it plays to the myth of history's great actress-monarch, a character who puts today's tinselly political heros and heroines (royal and not), to shame.

Revealing: At the very end of the movie, when Elizabeth is walking to her throne as the Virgin Queen, the music being played is a Requiem written by Mozart.
Factual error: Elizabeth did not start wearing wigs and heavy makeup until later in her reign, and although it was a combination of vanity and political shrewdness, it had nothing to do with the Virgin Mary.
Elizabeth very much wanted to keep the image of an eternally youthful Queen, both for her own vanity, and to belie the fact that she was aging, and possibly weak or ill. Also, all this is intended to covere up the elderly monarch's smallpox scars.
