Foreman grew up in Houston, Texas, and learned to box in a U.S. Job Corps camp in Oregon.
U.S. author Elizabeth Foreman Lewis received the 1933 Newbery Medal and the 1960 Lewis Carroll Shelf Award for Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze, one of several children's books she wrote based on her experiences in China.
