The only time we have seen a comparable achievement to Patrick's performance was back in 1926 when Elizabeth Junek, a 26-year-old from Czechoslovakia took part in the Targa Florio, the toughest motor race of them all at the time.
Later that year Junek's husband was killed racing at the Nurburgring and she quit the sport, living quietly in Czechoslovakia until her death in the early 1990s.
Junek might have achieved much more and the glory of Danica Patrick is that she is just beginning her international career.

What makes Junek's performance unforgetable is that she was opposed to magic names and she was ahead of the great drivers of the time : Campari, Divo and if I remember well other magic names as Nuvolari and Chiron, many of them on the same car (Bugatti T35 ?).
The supercharged Audi Quattro that Michèle Mouton drive during her most successfull years had not the reputation to be "easier" to drive as the Bugatti and the pilots she was opposed to were not amateurs in any sense of the word and her achievements are at least of the same level.
But the fact Junek retired at the death of her husband (could be because she was out of money...) had a flavor of romantism to her story.

But Nice was gifted, for it was extraordinarily difficult to drive cars like a supercharged Bugatti or an Alfa Romeo -- and frightening.

Automotive History for Women -- ROAD & TRAVEL Magazine
During the '50s, Denise McCluggage surfaced as one of the most celebrated racers of her time, with wins in automobiles ranging from Ferrari's, Porsches, OSCAs, and Ford Falcons, on surfaces as diverse as Sebring's flat and bumpy runways, the Nьrburgring's many twists and turns, and the rally circuit's snowy mountain passes.
Truly a pioneer, McCluggage recharged waning inertia of such pre-war women drivers as Elizabeth Junek and Brenda Stewart, heralding the worldwide acceptance of soon-to-be heroines such as Janet Guthrie, Shirley Muldowney, and Lyn St. James.
McCluggage played an important and significant role in elevating women race car drivers from mere novelty to serious competitors.
