  oodiscs #56: ELIZABETH PANZER, harp
Elizabeth has been steadfast in moving the harp into position in contemporary concert music, regardless of genre, over the past decade.
Panzer has had one particularly significant role model in this initiative: her teacher Lucile Lawrence, who in her 90s is still teaching two days a week in Boston and two days a week in New York.
Panzer is strongly influenced by her work with Lawrence 'Butch' Morris, Reggie Workman, Gerry Hemingway, Anne LeBaron, LaDonna Smith, Anthony Braxton and Nils Vigeland.

Reggie Workman: Cerebral Caverns - Liner Notes
Geri Allen turns in incisive work on four numbers, cagily establishing a middle ground between Workman's bass and Elizabeth Panzer's harp on the four-part "Seasonal Elements (Spring-Summer-Fall-Winter)," and reminding us in the process that the piano is itself a stringed instrument, should one choose to play it that way.
The new colors on this disc are provided by Panzer's harp, Tapan Modak's tablas, and Gerry Hemingway's samples and electronic drum pads, all of which Workman puts to imaginative use, in pieces that seem to measure the emotional distance between sound and silence, stasis and movement, composition and improvisation.
That is to say, he delights in bringing together what might seem on paper to be unusual combinations of instruments and instrumentalists, and giving them, if not quite a free hand, as much freedom as suits his purpose.

Elizabeth Panzer's harp shimmers delicately, as if her instrument were designed specifically for the occasion.
When, after introducing the theme, Workman leaves aside his bow to pluck out a buoyant bass pattern, Panzer's harp weighs in with biting, guitarlike interjections.
Allen, meanwhile, introduces herself by stroking the innards of her piano, producing an eerie, brittle sound.
