In these days, Rockefeller visited the oil regions and was appalled by the anarchic conditions he found there.
Together with Rockefellers brother William and the latter’s brother-in-law Oliver Burr Jennings, these men made up the original founders of the Standard Oil Company of Ohio, which emerged from their refining business in 1870.
He left his business in the able hands of his lieutenant John D. Archbold and groomed his son John Davison Rockefeller jr for the administration of the Rockefeller foundations, to which he left about half of his large fortune, the first billion dollar accumulation in American history.

The Rockefeller Archive Center - Laura Spelman Rockefeller Biographical Sketch
In the reorganization of Rockefeller philanthropies in 1929, the operations of the Memorial were absorbed by the Rockefeller Foundation.
It was in that same year that her former classmate, John D. Rockefeller, began to call on Miss Cettie Spelman, the pretty, serious school teacher who devoted her free time to the church and to practicing the piano.
A growing family required larger quarters, and in 1868 the Rockefellers moved to a large but unpretentious brick house on Cleveland's Euclid Avenue, which came to be known as "Millionaire's Row." Five years later, John acquired suburban property with a fine view of Lake Erie.

The fortune was originally made by John Davison Rockefeller and his brother William in the consolidation of the early American oil industry under the mantle of their Standard Oil Company.
The younger brother, William Rockefeller, was the first of the Cleveland Standard Oil clique to settle in New York, where he developed a close relationship to Wall Street and more specifically to James Stillman of the National City Bank.
William Rockefeller became a large shareholder of the National City Bank and his alliance with the Stillman family was sealed by the marriage of his two sons with two Stillman daughters.

Drug Policy Alliance: Warning: Oppose Rockefeller Reform at Your Own Risk
Albany county voters made their feelings on the Rockefeller drug laws clear in yesterday’s Democratic primary: the incumbent district attorney, Paul Clyne, one of the most powerful and vociferous supporters of these draconian laws, was trounced by David Soares, who ran on a platform of repealing them.
Enacted over thirty years ago, the Rockefeller drug laws remain some of the country’s harshest, incarcerating non-violent first time drug offenders for sentences that range from 15 years to life—longer bids, in many cases,  than murderers and rapists receive.
The most powerful voice against reform is that of the state’s prosecutors and D.A.s, who have a strong interest in maintaining the status quo, which puts the power to decide sentences in the hands of prosecutors, not judges.  D.A.s have used their considerable political clout to prevent any real reform from taking place.
