John Roemer is Elizabeth S. and A. Varick Stout Professor of Political Science and Economics, Yale University.
In this book, Roemer gives us a very useful overview of [this] field...The main results of social choice and axiomatics of resource allocation are presented in a clear and non-technical, albeit rigorous, way, and are put in the perspective of philosophical debates on justice.
Roemer's most impressive contribution, however, is not in synthesizing the philosophical literature but in formalizing its suppositions and drawing out their implications, using the methodological apparatus of modern economics.

Instead of firms and households, Roemer offers us classes; instead of the `social welfare function' he proposes exploitation as the criterion of justice.
Roemer believes not, and 'the consequence is a theoretical disarray of modern Marxism in attempting to explain the laws of motion of socialism.' The book is divided into three parts that deal respectively with exploitation and class in subsistence economies, accumulating economies, and socialist economies.
Roemer's is a major contribution to Marxian economic theory.

Note2: If Maria Elizabeth BARTH had been born in 1856, she would have been under 10 years of age when her 1st known child was born.
However, her date of death appears to be accurate, and it is accompanied by a calculation: "57 years, 1 month, 24 days." Using her date of death as a starting point, the calculation would take her date of birth back to 5 February 1836.

She estimated the magnitude as 16, and said the comet was diffuse, with a sharply condensed nucleus of magnitude 17.1.
Although the comet had been reported as the lost periodic comet Tempel-Swift, Roemer's precise position revealed the comet's motion was not what would be expected for that comet.
Elizabeth Roemer and L. Vaughn (University of Arizona, USA) recovered this comet on two 60-minute exposures obtained with the 229-cm reflector at Kitt Peak on 1971 July 26.36.

Now Dr. Elizabeth Roemer of the University of California has found evidence that Polaris has a second, nearby companion that cannot be seen even with the biggest telescopes.
Moore of Lick Observatory noticed that the spectrum of Polaris, which is a brilliant supergiant, showed irregularities suggesting that it is revolving around still another star.
Roemer, by carefully comparing a long series of spectrograms, proved that Polaris is circling once in 30½ years around a dim and probably close companion whose faint light is wholly blotted out by the glare of the supergiant.

Conditions were still poor for the 1953 return, but Elizabeth Roemer managed to photograph the comet nearly 7 months after perihelion, after it had cleared the sun's glare.
Although conditions were just as unfavorable at the 1960 and 1967 returns, Roemer's recovery enabled the orbit to again be precise enough to enable an earlier recovery and the maximum observed magnitudes were 15 and 16, respectively.
The comet experienced another moderately close approach to Jupiter during 1972 which reduced the orbital period to 6.8 years.
