Mathew Stuart, 4º Earl of Lennox, was a Scottish nobleman, related to the royal family, being next in the line of succession to the throne after James Hamilton, 2º Earl of Arran.
The Earl and the Countess of Lennox kneel with his younger son Charles and his grndson James of Scotland,
Lennox returned to Scotland in 1542, on the death of James V, to contest Arran's claim to be regent for the infant Mary Queen of Scots.

 Lady Arabella STUART
The remarkable Elizabethan woman, Bess of Hardwick, Countess of Shrewsbury, engineered a marriage between her daughter, Elizabeth, and Charles Stuart, the brother of Mary, Queen of Scots' husband, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley.
The child's family connexions were impressive; first cousin of James VI of Scotland; niece of Mary, Queen of Scots; cousin-german of Queen Elizabeth of England; heiress of the earldom of Lennox in her own right, and sixth in succession to the English throne.
At that time she was on good terms with her husband's prisoner, Mary Stuart, whose aid she enlisted in an attempt to procure for Arabella any of the deceased Countess's possessions, not yet seized by the Crown.

In 1574 Bess, the Countess of Shrewsbury took advantage of a visit of the Countess of Lennox to marry her daughter Elizabeth to Charles Stuart, the younger son of the Lennoxes and brother of Lord Darnley, the second husband of the Mary Queen of Scots.
Elizabeth Hardwick, or Hardwicke, Countess of Shrewsbury, known as Bess of Hardwick, (1527-1608) was the 3rd surviving daughter of John Hardwicke of Hardwicke in Derbyshire.
The Countess of Lennox, mother of the bridegroom, went to the Tower for several months, and Bess was ordered to London to face an official enquiry, but she ignored the summons, and remained in Sheffield until the row died down.

Catherine was first of all Miss Clifton; then Baroness Clifton in her own right: then by her marriage she became Lady Esme Stuart; upon her husband being created an Earl in 1619, she became Countess of March; and when he succeeded his brother in 1624 as third Duke, she became Duchess of Lennox.
This William Clifton sought his fortune in London and married Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Blount, and having acquired great wealth, bought Barrington which he left to his son Sir Gervase, created Lord Clifton, who was therefore cousin of the "gentle" Sir Gervase Clifton of Clifton.
An enormous picture of Sir Robert hangs in the Hall Stair-case; he is mounted on a favourite grey horse; Nottingham Castle is in the background,—a cigar (said to be as essential to a resemblance of him, as a carnation is to his nephew and successor!) lies on the floor.
