Elizabeth von Arnim (August 31, 1866 - February 9, 1941) was a British novelist and, through marriage, a member of the German nobility.
Born Mary Annette Beauchamp in Sydney, Australia, she was raised in England and in 1891 married Count Henning August von Arnim, a Prussian aristocrat, and the great-great-great-grandson of King Friedrich Wilhelm I of Prussia.
Elizabeth von Arnim spent old age in London, in Switzerland, and on the French Riviera.

While on an Italian holiday at the age of 23, she met the much older Baron Henning August von Arnim-Schlagerthin, and soon after married him and moved to his German country estate.

Graves (Elizabeth Ashley), an autocratic older woman with a manner that seems immune to warming.
Elizabeth Ashley is delightfully imperious as the dowager who refuses to let life intrude on the past she prefers -- though Barber rather overdoes the shtik about her walking stick which ultimately serves as a conclusion to an introductory anecdote about a wooden stick taking root.

To me, this is much the best of Von Arnim's writing.
