		The County was named for Elk River which runs in a diagonal direction from northwest to southeast.
		As of July 1, 2001, the population of the county was 3,189.

	Elk County, Part 1
		The county of Elk is situated in the southeastern part of the State of Kansas.
		The surface of the county is chiefly high, broken prairie, particularly back from the streams, and in the western part of the county they are of increased elevation, rising into what are known as the "Flint Ridges," while toward the northern and interior parts the surface becomes more level and even.
		The timber is scarce in the county, and is confined to narrow belts fringing the streams.
