The creation of other townships in Jefferson County naturally reduced the size of Springfield, and when Carroll County was organized in 1813 it was proposed to incorporate the township into that county, but the people in the eastern sections protested, and it was left in its present form attached to Jefferson.
Wolf and Lick Runs and Elk Fork of Yellow Creek drain the southern part of the township, the middle and northern parts being drained by the middle and north fork of Yellow Creek.
The township is rugged but has good farms, while the coal and limestone have caused a large development, especially in the western and northern parts.

Pennsylvania’s volumes of low-level radioactive waste decreased from more than 200,000 cubic feet to less than 150,000 cubic feet during the past 15 years.  Currently, almost all low-level radioactive waste generated in Pennsylvania is shipped to disposal facilities in Utah and South Carolina.
Pennsylvania continues to prove it is economical to reduce and prevent pollution through “green” technology and services.  Pennsylvania ranked fourth in the nation in environmental technology products and services, bringing in $10.4 billion in annual revenue and more than $1.3 billion in export revenue, putting more than 76,000 to work at nearly 6,700 firms.

Elk Lick Township (so named from a salt lick within the township which the elk and deer used to frequent) was organized as a division of Bedford County about the year 1785.
According to a census enumeration made in 1785, the male inhabitants between the ages of 18 and 43, in the whole of the present counties of Bedford and Somerset, where 1220, 623 of whom were in the territory, which subsequently became Somerset County.
Even under the old constitution, before he received his commission from the Governor of Pennsylvania, the JP married as many, if not more, than the minister, for which he was not allowed to charge more than one dollar.

On "the great road from Bedford to Pittsburgh", later known as the Pennsylvania Road and then the Lincoln Highway, we find John Dennison's public houses in Jennerstown said to have been built in 1806 (JB-033), and several brick townhouses in Stoystown dating from at least the 1830's (SY-101-045,008).
The copybook of Jacob Baker, a prominent farmer and distiller, records the purchase of 230 bricks from potter Andrew Hirsh of Somerset Township in 1802.
While even an eleven year old boy was useful in hauling the brick, it took an experienced potter, mason, or brick maker to mix the clay, sand, and water in the correct proportions and to construct the kiln for firing.
