The drainage basin of the Elk River is located in about the central part of the state, and is long and comparatively narrow, bing some what bow shaped.
It is bounded on the east and north by the Little Kanawha River, Tygart River, and Cheat River basins, and on the south and west by the Gauley and Greenbrier rivers.
The Elk River was an invaluable means of transporting large rafts of logs and crossties, as well as large freight canoes, to the river's mouth at Charleston, WV during the 1800's and early-1900's.

Featured in the 1998 July/August edition of American Angler, the Elk River is described as "the last freshwater angling frontier in the East." Fed by limestone springs and tributaries, the Elk River's upper watershed located above the town of Webster Springs is a haven for brown, rainbow and brook trout.
The Elk River begins its 180 mile journey to the Kanawha River at Charleston near the small town of Slatyfork in West Virginia's Pocahontas County.
The river then flows underground for approximately four miles - this section is referred to as "The Dries" - until it emerges again at Cowger's Mill where it is fed by another spring emerging from the Tygart River drainage.

The new book is titled Upper River: Elk’s Origins and Beyond, and follows the river from its beginning at Slatyfork, West Virginia, all the way to its meeting with the Kanawha River at Charleston, the state capital, a distance of one hundred and seventy-two miles.

The history of the Elk River Railroad first began on July 12th, 1989, when sixty one miles of out of service railroad between Gilmer and Hartland, West Virginia, was leased by a local corporation, Bright Enterprises.
In the late afternoon light of March 27, 1999, the Elk River Railroad is awaiting the arrival of a CSX Turn with hoppers for loading at Avoca.

Leaving from the Elk River Touring Center, we took SR 219 south to FR 24, which is where the lower mountain trails of the Gauley Mountain system are.
Our plan was to ride FR 24 for a couple of miles to Props Run's trailhead and ride the trail down the mountain, back to the Touring Center and then get in another car and go after the car we left at the Tea Creek trailhead.

This road, up from Porter Creek to the top of the ridge, and then down to Birch Run, on the Elk River, is the first established road in Clay County.
When the railroad was originally built up the Elk River in 1890, it was simply called the "Black Jack Line." It went through many ownerships and name changes until becoming the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad in 1917, having reached Birch Run around 1903 where a flag station was established.
There is nothing now at Birch Run along the Elk River except a few weekend cabins often hidden by the morning mists.
