Elk Township was formed in 1857 from 10.4 square miles that were formerly part of East Nottingham.
The survey, which deliniated the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland, and the southern boundry of Elk Township, was completed in 1769.
It is not surprising that this township is dotted with mills, since it is bordered on the east by the Big Elk Creek, with branches of the Little Elk Creek winding through the area.

For the second consecutive year, DCNR joined other state agencies and Benezette Township officials in a cooperative “Elk Patrol” and public education effort to improve wildlife-viewing tourism and lessen traffic and related problems in some areas of the elk’s prime range.

The Pennsylvania-Reading Railroad gave ground to Elk Township for a monument in honor of the soldiers who served in World War 1, on which their names were inscribed.
In the 1980's the railroad tracks were removed and now you don't hear the sounds of the train comming through town anymore..
The old area where the tracks were is now used for the public to access the soccerball field and on the Fourth of July to be able to drive back to the fireworks display put on by the Township.

He was commissioned by Richard Yates, the War Governor of Illinois, as Justice of the Peace November 29, 1864; he was elected Supervisor of Elkville Township in 1872, and was re-elected in 1874.
He was born in 1847, and is a son of George and Sarah (Pyle) Schwartz who were numbered among the pioneers of the state, having settled in the southern part of Illinois in 1812, during territorial days.
They were natives of Pennsylvania and Kentucky respectively and on leaving their childhood home became residents of Jackson County, Ill, locating south of Murphysboro.
