  Elkhorn Montana Ghost Town
Dating from the second wave of Montana's gold and silver rushes, Elkhorn has survived as one of the better ghost towns in the west.
Elkhorn has been designated one of the most important historical sites in the West and renovation has been undertaken by the Western Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society.
Elkhorn flourished in the 1880's and 90's, when millions of dollars worth of gold and silver were mined.

 Montana DEQ Elkhorn Mining District
The Elkhorn mining district is located in the Pioneer Mountains northwest of Comet Mountain at the headwaters and on the divide of Wise River and Grasshopper Creek.
The geology of the Elkhorn district is taken primarily from Winchell (1914:168-159) who describes the country rock of the Elkhorn district as a porphrytic quartz monzonite with euhedral plagioclase, quartz, biotite, horneblende, magnetite, apatite, and pyrite.
The Elkhorn mine project is significant as an example of one of the few large-scale silver mining projects in Montana during the early part of the twentieth century.

 Montana DEQ Elkhorn Mining District
Historically Elkhorn was connected to the Northern Pacific Railway by a spurline from Boulder that was constructed in 1887.
The Elkhorn district was prospected early in the history of the State and numerous quartz locations were made in the years preceding 1870, but the district did not attract attention until the A. Holter lode became a producing mine.
This property, later known as the Elkhorn mine, has been the principal and, in fact, almost the only producer of the district, and was for many years one of the prominent silver mines of the country.
